February 2022 - Tata Tigor Petrol, CNG Variants Explained - Which One To Buy?
In this variant explained article, you'll find out which variant of the Tata Tigor petrol or CNG you should buy based on the ex-showroom prices, variant-wise features and value for money. Here we compare and objectively analyse the 2022 Tigor's petrol and CNG variants and the features to figure out which variant is worth buying for a good value for money and ownership experience. Then we will compare the engine specs, dimensions and mileage of the Tata Tigor with its competitors and other petrol-powered B2-segment sedans like Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Aura and Honda Amaze.

Updated (Feb 3, 2022): Tata Motors recently updated the prices of the Tigor. Tata Tigor CNG is also now available. So, this article includes the details and buying recommendations for the Tigor petrol as well as Tigor CNG with the latest 2022 prices.
What Are The Pros And Cons Of Tata Tigor Petrol And CNG?
The pros or advantages of Tata Tigor are:
- A reasonably long list of features including auto AC, projector headlamps, LED DRLs, touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, steering-mounted controls, auto headlamps, auto wipers, auto AC, keyless entry and more
- The only sub-4m sedan with a 4-star GNCAP crash test rating (Note that the Amaze sold in Africa also has a 4-star rating but the GNCAP haven’t tested the India-spec model of the Amaze)
- Option of 3 powertrains; petrol-manual, petrol-auto and CNG-manual
- Largest-in-class boot space of 419L is on par with the Honda Amaze
- The only car in the segment with hydraulic struts for the boot lid; these look premium and don’t intrude into the boot cavity
- The CNG kit carries a reasonable premium of Rs. 90,000, which you can recover in about 30,000km (calculated based on the current fuel prices and official mileage figures)
- A rare car with the option of factory CNG kit in top variant
The Tata Tigor petrol and CNG has the following shortcomings or problems:
- No diesel engine option; the Amaze and Aura, both have a diesel engine with manual as well as automatic transmission
- No turbo petrol engine option available
- Missing features like cruise control, LED headlights and front centre armrest
- The base variant is too basic and misses out on many must-have features
- 3-cylinder petrol engine can’t match the inherent refinement of a 4-cylinder engine; all of its rivals have a 4-cylinder petrol engine
What Is The Price Of Tata Tigor Petrol And CNG Variants?
The Tata Tigor has a starting price of Rs. 5.8 lakh for the XE petrol manual and the price range stretches up to Rs. 8.0 lakh for the XZ Plus petrol automatic. The price difference between the manual and automatic variants is constant at Rs. 60,000.

Additionally, the Tigor is now also available with a CNG bi-fuel option in the XZ and XZ Plus variants for an additional cost of Rs. 90,000. The Tigor XZ CNG and XZ Plus CNG variants cost Rs. 7.7 lakh and Rs. 8.3 lakh (ex-showroom). Based on the official mileage figures of the Tigor petrol and CNG and the current fuel prices in Delhi, you can expect to recover this additional cost in about 30,000km. If you intend to drive the car for considerably more than 30,000km, then you can consider buying the Tigor CNG.

Tata Tigor Petrol XE - Base Model Features & Review
The base model of the Tata Tigor is only available with a petrol-manual powertrain and costs Rs. 5.8 lakh. The XE variant gets some notable features like front power windows, tilt steering, body-coloured bumpers, adjustable front headrests and 14-inch steel wheels.
This variant misses out on some key features like day/night internal mirror, music system, wheel covers, power mirrors, remote central locking and body-coloured door handles. Because of these missing features, we won’t recommend buying this variant even to budget buyers.

Tata Tigor Petrol XE vs XM Variant
The Tata Tigor XM costs Rs. 6.3 lakh with the manual and Rs. 6.9 lakh with the AMT automatic. The XM variant is Rs. 50,000 more expensive than the XE. For Tigor automatic buyers, this is the most affordable variant.

Over the base XE variant, it adds some extra features like a day/night inside mirror, wheel covers, music system, remote central locking, a display for rear parking sensors and rear power windows. While the list of additional features is short, most of these are must-haves in our books. Moreover, the asking price is also reasonable for this variant. So, even if you’re on a budget and are looking to buy the Tigor petrol, you should at least consider this variant.

The XZ variant is the most affordable option with the CNG bi-fuel option and costs Rs.6.8 lakh, which is Rs. 90,000 more than the XZ petrol-manual. Based on the official mileage figures and the current fuel prices in Delhi, you can expect to recover this higher cost in 30,000km.

For the additional cost of Rs. 50,000, the Tigor XZ variant adds the following notable features:
- Front fog lamps
- Steering-mounted controls
- Keyless entry with push-button start/stop
- Cooled glovebox
- Power mirrors
- Electric boot unlock
- Rear armrest with cup holders
- Chrome door handles
With the XZ variant, you get most of the must-have features but it’s not a great value for money option of the Tigor. This variant is suitable for buyers who don’t want to stretch the budget for the XZ Plus variant or don’t find those variants critical. For buyers who are interested in the CNG bi-fuel option, the XZ variant is the most affordable option. You’ll need to drive the car for about 30,000km to recover the additional Rs. 90,000, which you’re paying for the factory-fit CNG kit. This asking price is reasonable compared to the other carmakers who also offer factory-fit CNG options.

- Rear parking camera
- Auto AC
- Auto headlamps
- Auto wipers
- Power folding mirrors

The top-spec variant gets a good mix of must-have and good-to-have features. Tigor XZ Plus variant also offers a very good value for money for the additional features it offers over any of the lower variants. The Tata Tigor XZ Plus variant is our top recommendation for all Tigor buyers regardless of whether you want to buy it with the petrol-manual, petrol-automatic or CNG-manual combination.

Which Variant Of The Tata Tigor Petrol And CNG Should You Buy?
Let’s first start with the recommendation for the Tigor petrol-manual buyers. The top-spec XZ Plus variant offers the best value for money along with a good mix of must-have and good-to-have features.
If you don’t mind missing out on some of the features of the XZ Plus variant and want to save some cash, then you can consider the lower XZ variant. While it has a lower VFM score, it has a far better bias in favour of must-have features. So you get mostly utility-focused features.
If you’re on a tight budget, then you should at least consider the XM variant. The base XE variant has several critical features missing. So, we strongly suggest you stretch your budget for the XM variant.

The Tata Tigor petrol automatic is available in only the mid-spec XM and top-spec XZ Plus variants. Between these two, the XM variant is suitable for buyers on a tight budget but the XZ Plus remains our top recommendation for better value and a balanced set of features.

If you’re interested in the CNG bi-fuel option of the Tigor, then you have the higher XZ and the fully-loaded XZ Plus variant. Here too, the XZ is a good choice for buyers who find its feature list satisfactory and don't want to spend any more cash. However, if you can stretch your budget and also want some good-to-have features, then the Tigor XZ Plus CNG is totally worth the upgrade considering the incremental asking price over the lower variants.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Tata Tigor Petrol And CNG?
Just like most of its rivals, the Tigor petrol also gets a 1.2L normal petrol engine, which makes 86PS of power and 113Nm of peak torque. This engine is available with a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT automatic transmission. With the manual, it promises to deliver a mileage of 19.93kmpl and 19.28kmpl with the automatic. All of these specs are on par with most of its rivals. Only the Dzire manages to beat the Tigor petrol’s mileage figures. Meanwhile, the Aura turbo beats the Tigor on the power and torque front because of the turbocharger.

What Are The Dimensions Of The Tata Tigor?
The Tata Tigor is the narrowest car in its segment but also the tallest. It has the largest boot space in the segment, which is on par with the Amaze and offers a good 170mm ground clearance. With the CNG kit, the ground clearance drops to 165mm, which is still satisfactory for a sedan.
