February 2022 - Tata Tiago Petrol Variants Explained - Which One To Buy?
In this variant explained article, you'll find out which variant of the Tata Tiago petrol you should buy based on the ex-showroom prices, variant-wise features and value for money. Here we compare and objectively analyse the 2022 Tiago's petrol variants and the features to figure out which variant is worth buying for a good value for money and ownership experience. Then we will compare the engine specs, dimensions and mileage of the Tata Tiago with its competitors and other petrol-powered B1-segment hatchbacks like Maruti Suzuki Swift, Nexa Ignis and Hyundai Grand i10 Nios.

Updated (Feb 5, 2022): Tata Motors recently updated the prices of the Tiago petrol. This article includes the latest prices and buying recommendations.
What Are The Pros And Cons Of Tata Tiago Petrol?
The pros or advantages of Tata Tiago petrol are:
- A reasonably long list of features including auto AC, projector headlamps, LED DRLs, touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, steering-mounted controls, auto headlamps, auto wipers, auto AC and keyless entry
- The only petrol hatchback in its segment with a 4-star GNCAP crash test rating
- Satisfactory ground clearance of 170mm for a hatchback
The Tata Tiago petrol has the following shortcomings or problems:
- 3-cylinder engine can’t match the inherent refinement of a 4-cylinder engine; most of its rivals have a 4-cylinder engine
- The base variant is too basic even for buyers on a tight budget and misses out on several must-have features
What Is The Price Of Tata Tiago Petrol Variants?
The Tata Tiago petrol is available in 5 variants with prices starting from Rs. 5.2 lakh for the XE manual. XZ Plus is the top variant of the Tiago petrol and it costs Rs. 6.63 lakh (ex-showroom) with the manual transmission. The Tiago petrol is also available with an AMT automatic in the top 3 variants with prices ranging between Rs. 6.35 lakh and Rs. 7.18 lakh. The automatic transmission is available for a flat Rs. 55,000 premium over the petrol-manual variants.

Tata Tiago Petrol XE - Base Model Features & Review
The base model of the Tata Tiago petrol costs Rs. 5.2 lakh and it’s only available with a petrol-manual powertrain. It gets some notable features like tilt steering, body-coloured bumpers, adjustable front headrests, rear parcel tray, black door handles and 14-inch steel wheels.
This variant misses out on some key features like day/night internal mirror, music system, wheel covers, power mirrors, power windows, remote central locking and body-coloured door handles. Because of these missing features, we won’t recommend buying this variant even to budget buyers.

Tata Tiago Petrol XE vs XTO Variant
The Tata Tiago XTO petrol costs Rs. 5.65 lakh, which is Rs. 45,000 more than the XE. The XTO variant of the Tiago petrol is also available with a manual transmission only. For the additional price, this variant adds features like remote central locking, steering-mounted controls, all power windows, 4 speakers, wheel covers, power mirrors and day/night inside mirror.

The incremental asking price for the XTO petrol variant of the Tiago is only slightly higher than expected and it also almost justifies this price gap. So, you’re not compromising much on value, but it still doesn’t get a music system. If you intend to add an aftermarket music system, then the XTO is a fantastic option for budget buyers as it gets most of the must-have features.

Tata Tiago Petrol XTO vs XT Variant
The Tata Tiago XT petrol variant costs Rs. 5.8 lakh, which is Rs. 15,000 more than the XTO petrol-manual. For an additional Rs. 55,000, you can also get the Tiago XT petrol with the AMT automatic transmission.

This is the most affordable variant with an automatic transmission. This variant only adds a music system and a display for rear parking sensors. For most budget buyers, who don’t want to fiddle with aftermarket accessories, the XT variant is an ideal choice.

Tata Tiago Petrol XT vs XZ Variant
The Tata Tiago XZ petrol costs Rs. 6.2 lakh with the manual and Rs. 6.75 lakh with the automatic transmission. These prices are Rs. 40,000 more than the XT variant.

The XZ variant adds the following notable features:
- 7-inch touchscreen
- Android Auto and Apple Carplay
- Fog lamps
- Rear washer wiper
- Height-adjustable driver seat
- Stylish wheel covers
- Cooled glovebox
- 4 additional tweeters
- Power folding outside mirrors
- Rear parcel tray
For the incremental asking price the XZ petrol variant of the Tiago is a great value option. This variant has a great mix of must-have and good-to-have features. This variant is most suitable for most Tiago buyers from a value for money as well as ownership experience perspective.

Tata Tiago Petrol XZ vs XZ Plus Variant
The top-spec Tata Tiago XZ Plus petrol variant costs Rs. 6.63 lakh with the manual and Rs. 7.18 lakh with the automatic. These prices are Rs. 42,000 more than the lower XZ variant. For the additional price, this variant adds auto AC, LED DRLs, projector headlamps, rear parking camera and 15-inch alloy wheels.

Since this variant gets a rear view camera, Tata have removed the rear parking sensors from this variant.
On the value front, this variant justifies its asking price better than all of the lower variants. However, most of these features are good-to-have. So, we’ll suggest upgrading to this variant only if you want these features. The great thing about the upgrade to the XZ Plus variant is that you're getting the most value-for-money variant of the Tiago.

Which Variant Of The Tata Tiago Petrol Should You Buy?
The base XE variant of the Tiago petrol-manual is too basic and has almost no must-have features. So, we’ll recommend getting at least the XTO variant. However, if you don’t want to install an aftermarket music system, then the XT variant will suit the needs of most budget buyers.
If you can stretch your budget further, then the XZ variant is worth the upgrade. It offers a better mix of good-to-have and must-have features and also offers better value for money. If you find the features of the XZ Plus variant desirable, then you can upgrade to this variant as it has an even better VFM score. However, it doesn't have enough must-have features to warrant an upgrade. So, we'll leave this decision up to you.

For the Tiago petrol-automatic powertrain also, the XTA remains a good choice for budget buyers. But, the XZA offers a better balance of features for everyday usability and earns our top recommendation. The top-spec XZA Plus variant is worth upgrading from a value for money perspective. However, it doesn't have enough essential features to earn the must-upgrade badge from us. So, you’ll have to decide for yourself if you want to buy the XZ automatic or the XZ Plus automatic variant of the Tiago petrol.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Tata Tiago petrol ?
The Tiago has a 3-cylinder normal petrol engine which makes 86PS of power and 113Nm of torque. While its torque comes in sooner compared to the normal petrol engine of its rivals, it’s worth noting that all of its competitors offer a 4-cylinder engine. These are inherently balanced and are smoother than 3-cylinder engines.
The Nios turbo is the only other car in this segment with a 3-cylinder engine as an option but its meaty torque band because of the turbocharger gives you enough reasons to look past its number of cylinders.
The Tiago’s mileage figures are on par with its rivals save for the Swift, which has a significantly better mileage output from its new dual-jet engine.

What Are The Dimensions Of The Tata Tiago?
The Tiago offers a good middle ground in terms of dimensions as it's larger than the Ignis but a fair bit shorter than the Swift. The Tiago’s ground clearance is also somewhere in the middle for the segment at 170mm. So it’s better than the Nios and Swift, but less than that of the Ignis.
