February 2022 - Tata Tiago CNG Variants Explained - Which One To Buy?

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Tata Tiago CNG?

The pros or advantages of Tata Tiago CNG are:

• A reasonably long list of features including auto AC, projector headlamps, LED DRLs, touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, steering-mounted controls, auto headlamps, auto wipers, auto AC and keyless entry
• The only CNG hatchback with a 4-star GNCAP crash test rating
• The CNG kit carries a reasonable premium of Rs. 90,000, which you can recover in about 30,000km (calculated based on the current fuel prices and official mileage figures)
• A rare car with the option of factory CNG kit in base,mid and top variants
• Top-of-the-class power and torque figures when running on CNG

The Tata Tiago CNG has the following shortcomings or problems:

• Spare wheel is difficult to access because of the CNG fuel tank
• Official mileage figure is the lowest compared to other CNG hatchbacks
• 3-cylinder engine can’t match the inherent refinement of a 4-cylinder engine; most of its rivals have a 4-cylinder engine

What Is The Price Of Tata Tiago CNG Variants?

The Tata Tiago CNG has a starting price of Rs. 6.10 lakh for the XE variant. The Tiago CNG is available in 4 variants - XE, XM, XT and XZ Plus. The top variant of the Tiago with the CNG costs Rs. 7.53 lakh (ex-showroom). The CNG bi-fuel variants carry a premium of Rs. 90,000 over the petrol-manual variants. Based on the official mileage figures of the Tiago petrol and CNG and the current fuel prices in Delhi, you can expect to recover this additional cost in about 30,000km. If you intend to drive the car for considerably more than 30,000km, then you can consider buying the Tiago CNG.

Tata Tiago CNG XE - Base Model Features & Review

The base model of the Tata Tiago CNG costs Rs. 6.1 lakh. It gets some notable features like tilt steering, body-coloured bumpers, adjustable front headrests, rear parcel tray, black door handles and 14-inch steel wheels.

This variant misses out on some key features like day/night internal mirror, music system, wheel covers, power mirrors, power windows, remote central locking and body-coloured door handles. Because of these missing features, we won’t recommend buying this variant even to budget buyers.

Tata Tiago CNG XE vs XM Variant

The Tata Tiago XM CNG costs Rs. 6.4 lakh, which is Rs. 30,000 more than the XE. For this additional price, this variant adds features like music system, power windows, display for parking sensors, day/night inside mirror and central locking.

The incremental asking price for the XM CNG variant of the Tiago is only slightly higher and it also almost justifies this price gap. So, you’re not compromising on value, but it still doesn’t get some utilitarian features like power mirrors, steering-mounted controls, remote central locking and wheel covers. Budget buyers can consider buying the XM variant, but if you can stretch your budget, then we would suggest getting a higher variant.

Tata Tiago CNG XM vs XT Variant

The Tata Tiago XT variant with CNG costs Rs. 6.7 lakh, which is another Rs. 30,000 higher than the lower XM variant.

For this additional price, it adds the following notable features:

• Steering-mounted controls
• Power mirrors
• Remote central locking
• Wheel covers
• 2 extra speakers
• Auto door lock

With the XZ variant, you get most of the must-have features and it also justifies the incremental asking price over the lower variants. So, with this variant, you’re also not compromising on the value and it earns our top recommendation as it’ll suit the needs of most TIago CNG buyers.

Tata Tiago CNG XT vs XZ Plus Variant

The top-spec Tata Tiago XZ Plus CNG variant costs Rs. 7.53 lakh and it carries a large price premium of Rs. 83,000 over the lower XT variant. In terms of on-road price, the difference could get very close to Rs. 1.0 lakh. This variant adds the following notable additional features:

• Projector headlamps
• Rear defogger
• Rear parking camera
• Rear washer wiper
• Auto AC
• Cooled glovebox
• Power folding mirrors
• Height-adjustable driver seat
• Fog lamps
• Power folding mirrors
• 7-inch touchscreen
• Android Auto and Apple Carplay
• Stylish wheel covers
• LED DRLs

Since this variant gets a rear view camera, Tata have removed the rear parking sensors from this variant.

The top-spec variant gets a good mix of must-have and good-to-have features. While the price gap between the XZ Plus and XT variants is quite big, the top variant does justify its asking price. It’s the most value for money variant of the Tiago CNG. So,if you can afford the top-spec XZ Plus variant and find its features relevant, then you should buy this variant. Otherwise, the XT will serve you just fine.

Which Variant Of The Tata Tiago CNG Should You Buy?

The price gap between the lower 3 variants of the Tiago CNG is so small that we’ll strongly suggest most buyers stretch their budget to accommodate the XT variant. While it has the lowest VFM rank in terms of concrete numbers, it is still a pretty good value-for-money option. It also offers plenty of must-have features, which you’ll appreciate during your everyday ownership.

If you don’t want to stretch your budget for the XT variant, then you should at least buy the XM variant. The base XE is too basic and misses out on critical must-have features.

The top-spec XZ Plus variant of the Tiago CNG has quite a big premium over the lower XT variant. However, it also adds plenty of features to justify the higher asking price and earns top marks in the value-for-money department. If you can afford the XZ Plus in your budget, then you should upgrade to this variant, especially if you intend to hold on to the car for a longer duration like 7 or more years.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Tata Tiago CNG?

Compared to the other CNG bi-fuel hatchbacks in the segment, the Tiago CNG’s power and torque output are the highest. But the fuel efficiency figure with CNG are the lowest at 26.5kmpkg. With this figure and current CNG fuel cost in Delhi, you can expect a per km cost of Rs. 1.64. This is still Rs. 3.15 lower than the Tiago petrol. So, you can expect to recover the Rs. 90,000 higher price you’re paying for the Tiago CNG in about 30,000km.

What Are The Dimensions Of The Tata Tiago?

Compared to other CNG cars like the Celerio, WagonR, Santro and Grand i10 Nios, the Tiago has the shortest wheelbase and the second-lowest roofline. Otherwise, it has fairly standard dimensions for a B1-segment hatchback.

The Tiago CNG has 168mm of ground clearance, which is better than that of most other CNG hatchbacks and only 2mm lower than the petrol-only model. With the CNG fuel tank in the boot, the exact details about boot space available for luggage are not available for any of the cars in this comparison.
