What Are The Pros And Cons Of Hyundai Tucson?

The pros or advantages of Hyundai Tucson are:

  • ADAS features now available in the higher variant of the Tucson
  • Offers a choice of petrol and diesel engines
  • 4WD available at a reasonable price with the diesel-automatic powertrain and it solidifies Tucson’s claims over the SUV badge
  • It offers a very long list of features even in the base Platinum variant

The Hyundai Tucson has the following shortcomings or problems:

  • Non-turbo petrol engine offers poor power and torque output compared to its rivals; the fluid coupling of the torque converter automatic will further affect its fuel efficiency
  • The diesel engine carries a hefty Rs. 2.50 - 2.70 lakh premium over the petrol engine
  • Despite a noticeably longer length, the Tucson is quite a bit narrower and lower than the C5 Aircross, which also has 38mm better ground clearance
  • Missing features like puddle lamps, rear window and rear windshield curtains, wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay

What Is The Price Of Hyundai Tucson Variants?

The new Hyundai Tucson is available in 2 variants with petrol-automatic and diesel-automatic powertrains. The Tucson Platinum and Signature variants with the petrol-automatic powertrain cost Rs. 27.70 lakh and Rs. 30.17 lakh, respectively.

The 2 Tucson diesel variants cost Rs. 30.20 lakh and Rs. 32.87 lakh and they’re 2.50 - 2.70 lakh pricier than the petrol variants. The top-spec Signature variant with the diesel-automatic powertrain is also available with 4-wheel-drive for an additional Rs. 1.52 lakh and costs Rs. 34.39 lakh (ex-showroom).

Hyundai Tucson Petrol Vs Diesel — Should You Buy The Hyundai Tucson Diesel?

At first glance, the Tucson diesel seems quite expensive as it carries a healthy premium of Rs. 2.50 - 2.70 lakh over the comparable petrol-automatic variants. With such a high price gap, even the better fuel efficiency will only help you recover this higher upfront cost in about 1.20 - 1.30 lakh kilometres.

However, the significantly better performance of the Tucson diesel alone justifies almost 70% of this price gap. If you want better performance with the Tucson and are willing to pay an appropriate price, then the higher fuel efficiency pays back for the rest of the price gap in about 32,000 to 42,000km. This km-to-breakeven figure sounds a lot more reasonable

Please note that these calculations are based on the official mileage figures of the older model of the Tucson, which also uses the same petrol and diesel engines. We’ve also considered the fuel prices as of December 2022 to come to these final figures.

Depending on whether you value the better performance of the Tucson diesel over the petrol model, the fuel efficiency advantage and your usage during the ownership, you can decide if you should buy the Tucson diesel or petrol.

For the additional Rs. 2.47 - 2.67 lakh over the base variant, the Signature variant offers the following notable features:

  • 11 ADAS related features
  • 8-way power driver seat
  • Terrain modes (4WD only)
  • Powered boot lid

Even the top variant of the Tucson doesn’t get some features like:

  • Puddle lamps
  • Rear window curtains
  • Rear windshield curtain
  • Wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay

For Tucson petrol buyers, the upgrade to the Signature variant are justified because of the ADAS features. However, if you’re not interested in the ADAS features, then you can buy the lower Platinum variant.

For Tucson diesel buyers also, the upgrade to the Signature variant is almost justified if you want the ADAS features. But, with the 4WD option, the Tucson offers much better value for money. So, we will suggest considering the Tucson diesel 4WD for better value and you should buy the Platinum variant only if you’re not interested in the ADAS features.
