Hyundai Creta Petrol Variants Explained

Updated (Feb 9, 2024): This update of the 2024 Hyundai Creta facelift petrol variants explained article includes the introductory launch prices. Our buying recommendation in this article is based on the value for money and ownership experience.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of 2024 Hyundai Creta Petrol?

The pros or advantages of Hyundai Creta petrol are:

  • Reasonably loaded base variant with features like front and rear armrests, remote central locking, rear disc brakes, 6 airbags, ESC, HSA, TPMS, 5x 3-point seatbelts, tilt+telescopic steering
  • Top model offer a long list of features too like power driver seat with ventilation, pano sunroof, full ADAS suite and more
  • Good balance in terms of performance, fuel efficiency and dimensions without a single deal-breaker
  • Option of 3 petrol powertrain combinations - 1.5L normal petrol-manual, 1.5L normal petrol-automatic (CVT), 1.5L turbo petrol-automatic (DCT)
  • Class-leading performance figures for the turbo petrol engine
  • Being the best-selling car in its segment gives it a strong resale value

The Hyundai Creta petrol has the following shortcomings or problems:

  • No turbo petrol-manual variant; the turbo petrol engine itself carries a hefty premium that’s difficult to justify for the performance alone
  • Adaptive cruise control not available with manual transmission (Elevate offers this feature with the manual transmission also)
  • No variant of Creta is available under Rs. 10.0 lakh while a more feature-rich Astor base model costs under Rs. 10.0 lakh
  • EX and S variants offer incredibly poor value for money
  • There’s only 1 feature that you might miss in the Creta top model: powered tailgate

What Is The Price Of 2024 Hyundai Creta Facelift Petrol Variants?

The new Hyundai Creta 2024 available in 7 main variants - E, EX, S, S (O), SX, SX Tech and SX (O). The 1.5L normal petrol engine with manual transmission is available in all of these variants with prices ranging between Rs. 11.0 lakh and Rs. 17.24 lakh (ex-showroom).

The same 1.5L normal petrol engine is also available with a CVT automatic transmission in 3 variants - S (O), SX Tech and SX (O). It costs between Rs. 15.82 lakh and Rs. 18.70 lakh. The automatic transmission carries a premium of about Rs. 1.50 lakh over the manual transmission.

The top-spec SX (O) variant is also available with a new 1.5L turbo petrol engine and DCT automatic transmission. It carries an ex-showroom price tag of Rs. 20.0 lakh, which is Rs. 1.30 lakh more than the comparable SX (O) normal petrol-automatic.

This variant doesn’t get several must-have features such as:

  • Rear washer wiper
  • Rear defogger
  • Steering-mounted controls
  • Power mirrors
  • Touchscreen
  • Rear parcel tray

If you can manage without some of these features and add an aftermarket touchscreen and parcel tray, then this seems like a better option than upgrading to the EX trim. The higher variant costs way too much for a small number of additional features. If you want more features, then for better value, we’ll recommend skipping the EX and even the S variant and stretching your budget for the S (O).

Even in this variant, you may miss the following:

More importantly, it’s absurdly overpriced and we’ll suggest you skip this trim and either buy the base model or stretch for at least the Creta S (O). The Creta EX variant is not recommended.

Hyundai Creta Petrol EX vs S Variant - Price & Features Comparison

Next variant in line for the Creta petrol-manual is the S, which is also available with a manual transmission. It costs Rs. 13.39 lakh (ex-showroom) and is Rs. 1.22 lakh pricier than the lower EX variant.

While the S trim improves the value quotient, it can’t close the gap the EX created. Thus, the price jump from E to S is still not justified even for some of its must-have features. If you are considering the S variant, then you should instead stretch a little more and go with the S (O), which offers superior value for money. The Creta S is not recommended.

Hyundai Creta Petrol S vs S (O) Variant - Price & Features Comparison

The S (O) variant is the most affordable one with an automatic transmission. It costs Rs. 14.32 lakh with the manual transmission and Rs. 15.82 lakh with the automatic. The S (O) variant costs Rs. 93,200 more than the lower S petrol-manual while the automatic costs another Rs. 1.50 lakh.

While this trim mostly offers good-to-have features, the inclusion of high-value items like panoramic sunroof and larger tyres with alloy wheels mostly make up for the incremental cost. In terms of pricing, the S (O) variant justifies the cost of upgrade all the way from the base model. The S (O) variant’s features aren’t critical but they will improve the ownership experience. For Creta petrol-manual buyers, the S (O) is our top recommendation.

For Creta petrol-automatic buyers, the S (O) is worth buying but the SX Tech is a superior deal and worth a bit more than the incremental asking price.

Hyundai Creta Petrol S (O) vs SX Variant - Price & Features Comparison

The SX variant is the next in line for Creta petrol-manual buyers. It costs Rs. 15.27 lakh, which is Rs. 94,500 more than the S (O) variant.

The SX variant of the Creta is not a value for money upgrade over the S (O). Since the SX Tech adds more interesting features for a reasonable incremental price, we’ll suggest you skip the SX and go with the SX Tech instead.

Hyundai Creta Petrol SX vs SX Tech Variant - Price & Features Comparison

The Creta SX Tech variant with the petrol-manual powertrain costs Rs. 15.95 lakh (ex-showroom), which is about Rs. 68,000 more than the SX. It’s also available with an automatic transmission, which costs another Rs. 1.50 lakh and carries an ex-showroom price of Rs. 17.45 lakh.

In this variant, you get all a long list of ADAS features. Except for the adaptive cruise control, all features are also available with the manual transmission. This fact makes it a rare car in this segment to offer a full suite of ADAS features with the manual transmission. The Honda Elevate is the only other car. The Astor and Seltos reserve them for the automatic.

The SX Tech is a value upgrade for Creta petrol-manual buyers and it earns our top recommendation among the Creta petrol-automatic variants.

Hyundai Creta Petrol SX Tech vs SX (O) Variant - Price & Features Comparison

The top-spec SX (O) variant gets 3 powertrain options — a normal petrol-manual, a normal petrol-automatic and a turbo petrol-automatic. The turbo petrol is also a 1.5L engine but it gets a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission unlike the normal petrol, which gets a CVT.

The 2024 Creta SX (O) costs Rs. 17.34 lakh with the manual transmission and Rs. 18.70 lakh with the normal petrol-auto (CVT). These prices are about Rs. 1.25 lakh more than the lower SX Tech trim. Here too, the automatic transmission costs about Rs. 1.50 lakh over the manual.

For another Rs. 1.30 lakh, you could get the more powerful turbo petrol engine with the DCT automatic transmission.

The SX (O) adds a few couple of must-have features while others are good-to-have. Moreover, these features don’t fully justify the incremental asking price over the SX Tech. The top model of the Creta is not a value upgrade but worth considering if you find these features essential to your ownership experience.

For Creta automatic buyers, the turbo petrol engine too is not a suitable choice because it has a poorer value quotient than the already-worsened SX (O) CVT automatic’s VFM percentage. If you’re interested in the turbo petrol engine, then you could wait for the N-Line and see if those variants offer any better value proposition.

Which Variant Of The Hyundai Creta Petrol Should You Buy?

Now, let’s recap the buying recommendation for the Hyundai Creta petrol buyers and start with the 1.5L petrol-manual powertrain. Here, budget-conscious buyers should just go with the base model and skip the next two. The EX and S variants are both very expensive for what they offer and only justify 35% and 50% of incremental cost over the base model, respectively.

The S (O) is our top recommendation considering its value for money ranking. However, you can also consider upgrading to the SX Tech for the ADAS features. The SX and SX (O) are not good value offerings but you can consider them if you value those features. At least, they aren’t offering as poor a value as the EX and S trims.

For Creta petrol-automatic buyers, between the S (O) is a decent option but an upgrade to the SX Tech is highly recommended. The SX (O) and SX (O) turbo are not value upgrades over the SX (O).

If you're interested in the turbo petrol engine, then you should see if you can wait for the Creta N-Line. This would also offer some cosmetic enhancements and stand out on the road, thus, better justifying the incremental cost over the non-turbo petrol model. Moreover, if it comes in multiple variants, you’ll also have the option of choosing the performance engine without buying the top model.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Hyundai Creta Petrol?

The Creta’s normal petrol engine delivers the same power and torque figures as before but brings a nominal improvement in the mileage figures. Not having a turbo petrol engine makes them inferior compared to smaller turbo petrol engines of the Kushaq, Taigun and C3 Aircross. Turbocharger not only improves the peak torque output, it also offers it much lower in the rev range. Therefore, they offer much better drivability and a noticeable performance improvement without even going over 3000rpm.

Otherwise, the Creta’s 1.5L perol engine’s specs are about on par with the non-turbo petrol engine SUVs of this segment. In terms of efficiency, the Grand Vitara and Hyryder lead the pack but Creta maintains a middle-of-the-road position in this aspect.

With the turbo petrol engine, the Creta leads the pack. It has the segment-best power and torque figures and the mileage figures are also good considering the performance on offer. Only the Grand Vitara and Hyryder’s turbo petrol engines beat the other high-end engine SUVs in terms of mileage. Although these 2 cars seem to offer much lower power and torque output, the electric motor assist gives them good drivability without compromising on the fuel efficiency. For this reason, the hybrids are worthy alternatives to consider if you don’t intend to squeeze full performance out of a big displacement turbo petrol engine.

What Are The Dimensions Of The Hyundai Creta?

On the dimensions front, again, the Hyundai Creta has good numbers on the sheet. The Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun sit at the bottom because of their smaller size. Most of these cars offer 16-inch wheels in their lower trims and 17 inches in top model. The C3 Aircross, Vitara and Hyryder offer 17-inch wheels as standard while the Seltos is the only one to offer 18-inch alloys among the C-segment SUVs.

In terms of ground clearance, they all offer satisfactory clearance. However, the Elevate literally elevates itself by offering considerably higher ground clearance of 220mm.

When you look at the boot space, all the hybrid hardware does take a toll on the Grand Vitara and Hyryder as they only manage to offer 265 litres of cargo volume, which is only a little more than that of the Ignis — their most affordable Nexa car.

Even without the hybrid, the Japanese twins offer shockingly lower cargo volumes despite their large exterior dimensions. The much smaller Taigun and Kushaq manage to squeeze in 385 litres of boot space while the Grand Vitara and Hyryder only offer 373 litres.

The Creta, meanwhile, offers good trunk volume, which is near the top of the list. In this area too, the Elevate leads with a 458 litres of storage capacity.

While we are on the topic of dimensions, the Kushaq and Taigun also stand out for offering very little of it. In fact, on the road, they look barely larger than a typical B2-segment SUV like a Nexon, Sonet or Brezza. So, the 2 German twins will provide poor road presence, which is an essential aspect of an SUV.

The Creta offers pretty much near-the-top kind of dimensions among its peers. So, in this area,
