Tata To Offer CNG-Powered Variants Of Selected Models | V3Cars
In March 2021, Tata Motors saw growth of almost 70 per cent in sales (YoY) and became the third-largest carmaker in India. Now, the carmaker is looking further to strengthen its position as Tata has confirmed it will also launch CNG-powered versions of some of its models. The demand for factory fitted CNG vehicles is seeing an upward trend in India and the introduction of CNG vehicles will help Tata Motors further boost its sales. Currently, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai are the only carmakers in India to offer factory-fitted CNG cars in India.
While Tata Motors has not yet confirmed which cars in its lineup will get the CNG treatment but we expect them to be entry-level models like the Tiago and Tigor. Both the cars are powered by a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that makes 86PS and 113Nm mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. This engine is also offered with a 5-speed AMT but it is not expected to be offered with the CNG variants. It is to be noted that CNG powered vehicles make less power and torque when compared to their petrol counterparts and it will be the same with Tata cars as well.
Along with Tiago and Tigor, Tata might also offer the CNG fuel option on the Altroz as well. If that happens, the Altroz will become the first premium hatchback to be available with a CNG fuel option.
The CNG-powered variants are expected to be priced at a premium of Rs 50,000 over the standard variants. Tata might offer the CNG option only the base-spec models of the two cars similar to what Maruti and Hyundai do with their cars as these cars are primarily targeted towards the commercial (taxi) segment.
Here is a list of cars that are currently being offered with factory-fitted CNG kits:
