Hyundai i20 Diesel Discontinued

Hyundai offered the i20 with a 1.5L turbo diesel engine. While the same engine is also available with the Creta, Alcazar, Kia Seltos and Carens, the i20 got a wastegate turbocharger with a lower state of tune. The 1.5L turbo diesel engine with a variable geometry turbocharger, which is available with the Creta, Alcazar, Kia Sonet, Seltos and Carens, now complies with the upcoming BS6 phase-2 and road driving emission standards. However, the 1.5L turbo diesel with the wastegate turbo will not be updated to meet the stringent emission standards.

Hyundai India also discontinued the turbo petrol variants of the i20 equipped with the auto-clutch manual transmission. Currently, the i20 comes with 2 engine options — 1.2L normal petrol engine and 1.0L turbo petrol engine. While the turbo petrol engine comes with a sole 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission (DCT), the 1.2L normal petrol engine comes with either a 5-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Hyundai are likely to update the i20 and i20 N Line with the BS6 phase-2 and E20 fuel compliant engine options soon. The Grand i10 Nios and Venue have already received the updated 1.2L normal petrol and 1.0L turbo petrol engines.

The Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz were the only 2 mass-market hatchbacks offered with a diesel engine. Since Hyundai have now discontinued the diesel variants of the i20, the Tata Altroz remains the only diesel mass-market hatchback available in the market. It is worth mentioning that neither the i20 diesel nor the Altroz diesel offer an automatic option with the diesel engine.
