What Are The Pros And Cons Of Hyundai i20 Petrol?

The pros or advantages of Hyundai i20 petrol are:

  • The i20 has a strong road presence because of its wide body, which is wider than even the C-segment sedans
  • All variants are well loaded with features and justify the incremental price gaps over lower variants; Magna and Asta offer tremendous value over the lower trims

The Hyundai i20 petrol has the following shortcomings or problems:

  • 1.2L petrol-automatic is not available in the otherwise well-loaded Asta variant and the reasonably loaded Magna variant
  • Missing features like split seats and rear armrest
  • It gets only 2 cup holders for front seat occupants; you get only 1 if you buy the variant with the air purifier; Addressed with Sep 2023 update as air purifier is removed from feature list
  • DCT automatic transmission has a questionable long-term reliability as it’s yet to prove itself in the Indian driving and climatic conditions; after Sep 2023 update, this is only applicable for N Line DCT automatic variants
  • The higher variants carry a higher ex-showroom price than other B2-segment hatchbacks

What Is The Price Of Hyundai i20 Petrol Variants?

The Hyundai i20 is available with a 1.2L normal petrol engine and you can have it with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic transmission. The manual transmission is available in all 5 variants with prices ranging from Rs. 6.99 lakh to Rs. 9.98 lakh (ex-showroom). The automatic transmission is available in the Sportz and Asta (O) variants with an ex-showroom price of Rs. 9.38 lakh and Rs. 11.01 lakh, respectively. The CVT automatic costs around Rs. 1.05 lakh more than the comparable manual variants.

The Magna variant also gets the same petrol-manual powertrain and costs Rs. 7.70 lakh. It’s Rs. 70,410 more expensive than the lower Era variant.

From a value standpoint, the Sportz is not the best option but it earns our top recommendation for the balance of must-have and good-to-have features. Moreover, it’s not a poor value option in any way. In fact, it more than justifies the incremental cost over the base model. It just doesn’t manage to earn the top spot.

Hyundai i20 Petrol Sportz vs Asta Variant - Price, Feature Comparison

The Asta variant is only available with the petrol-manual powertrain and it costs Rs. 9.29 lakh (ex-showroom). This price is Rs. 96,000 more than the lower Sportz variant.

The top model of the i20 gets almost exclusively good-to-have features, so we won’t encourage you to buy it. Moreover, when the lower Asta offers far better value, there’s no point in throwing it all away for a few features, which you may not even appreciate all that often during the ownership.

Which Variant Of The 2023 Hyundai i20 Petrol Should You Buy?

For the i20 petrol-manual buyers, there are 2 straightforward choices. The Magna is for budget buyers while the Sportz is our top recommendation. The Asta trim is also worth upgrading to if you like some of its features. Meanwhile, the base model is not recommended and the top model is an expensive upgrade.
