What Are The Pros And Cons Of Hyundai i20 Diesel?
The pros or advantages of Hyundai i20 diesel are:
- The i20 has a strong road presence because of its wide body, which is wider than even the C-segment sedans
- The i20 is a rare B2-segment hatchback with a diesel engine and it deserves an applause
- The diesel engine has a 25kmpl+ mileage figure and much better power and torque figures than the Altroz diesel
- All variants are well loaded with features and justify the incremental price gaps over lower variants
- Surprisingly, even the base variant offers enough features for a decent ownership experience
The Hyundai i20 diesel has the following shortcomings or problems:
- diesel-ACMT combination is not available with the i20; currently, the Seltos is the only car with this powertrain option
- A basic feature like split-folding rear seatbacks are not available in any variant
- It gets only 2 cup holders for front seat occupants; you get only 1 if you buy the variant with the air purifier
- The higher variants carry a high ex-showroom price for a B2-segment hatchback
What Is The Price Of Hyundai i20 Diesel Variants?
The Hyundai i20 diesel is available with 2 engines — a 1.2L normal diesel and a 1.0L turbo diesel. Both engines are available with manual and automatic transmissions, thus offering 4 unique engine-transmission combinations for customers.
The 1.2L normal diesel engine with the 5-speed manual transmission is available in all 4 variants with prices ranging between Rs. 7.07 lakh and Rs. 9.59 lakh. The 1.2L normal diesel engine with the CVT automatic transmission is available in Sportz and Asta (O) variants for Rs. 8.99 lakh and Rs. 10.61 lakh, respectively.
The 1.0L turbo diesel engine with 6-speed auto-clutch manual transmission is available in 4 variants with prices between Rs. 8.88 lakh and Rs. 11.03 lakh. Finally, the 1.0L turbo diesel engine with 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is available in 3 variants with ex-showroom prices ranging from Rs. 9.90 lakh to Rs. 11.96 lakh.

Hyundai i20 Petrol Vs Diesel — Should You Buy The Hyundai i20 Diesel?
Between the i20 1.2L normal petrol and 1.5L turbo diesel, the price difference varies hugely from variant to variant. It’s as low as Rs. 1.25 lakh for the Asta (O) variant. If you’re expecting to recover this higher upfront cost from better efficiency alone, then you will have to cover anywhere between 1.06 lakh to 1.14 lakh kilometres.
Note: This calculation is based on the official mileage figures and the September 2022 fuel prices in Delhi.
If you also value the performance benefits of the diesel engine like the higher power and torque output and an extra gear, then that should largely justify the price gap for the diesel engine. Once we take the mechanical advantages of the diesel engine into consideration, the km-to-breakeven figure drops drastically to more reasonable levels of 11,500km - 20,000km.
Similarly, with the turbo petrol engine and diesel engine, you’ll have to drive 32,000km to recover the upfront price gap. With the performance and mechanical differences, the figure changes a bit. For instance the turbo petrol engine has a higher power output than the diesel engine while the diesel engine has a higher torque output. The turbo petrol engine also gets the convenience of an auto-clutch manual transmission. With these differences taken into account, you’re looking at a km-to-breakeven figure of 19,500 for the Sportz variant.
