Goa’s Rent-a-Cab To Go Fully Electric In 2024

Rent-a-Cab To Go EV In Goa By January 2024 | V3Cars

The Chief Minister of Goa, Mr. Pramod Sawant, said that the state government has introduced a proposal to make rent-a-cab and rent-a-bike fully electric starting January 2024. If the proposal comes into effect, all vehicles purchased for various government departments will also be EVs starting 2024.

If the recently-announced move takes effect, all new passenger cars on rent in Goa registered after December 2023 will have to be all-electric models such as the Tata Tiago and Tigor EV, Nexon EV or the MG Comet EV. Under this proposal, permit holders having multiple tourist taxis, rent-a-bike and rent-a-cab have to ensure that 30 percent of their fleet comprises electric vehicles by June 2024.

“The Government of India has taken multiple steps to decarbonise transports, including the use of electric vehicles. The National Mission on Electric Mobility aims to improve charging infrastructure and develop a domestic manufacturing ecosystem,” said Mr. Sawant during the G20 India Energy Transitions working group meeting in Panaji.

“The per capita vehicle ownership in Goa is 4.5 times the national average, and Goa is ranked 15th in the world in terms of vehicle density,” said Mr. Sawant. Being a global tourism spot, more than 85 lakh tourists visit the state every year as against the state’s population of 15 lakh. This forms a major contributor for increased carbon emissions in the state due to the large number of taxis, rental vehicles and buses used by tourists. Based on a recent; study carried out by GIZ, 40 percent of the total carbon emission generated in Goa is due to the operation of vehicles,” the CM added.

Goa stands as a popular tourist spot for both Indian and international travelers, drawing many who rely on self-rented cars and 2-wheelers for transportation. The state government's initiative to promote electric vehicles (EVs) could lead to a significant surge in their adoption within the state. Embracing EVs would not only enhance convenience for tourists but also contribute to a reduction in carbon emissions, aligning with Goa's efforts towards a greener and more sustainable future.
