MG One Revealed With Brand New Sigma Platform

MG One Revealed With Brand New Sigma Platform | V3Cars

MG recently revealed their new MG One SUV. This new car uses the brand’s all-new Sigma platform. The new modular platform uses more than 100 substructures, which allow MG to adapt it to any body style and all of the new generation engine-transmission configurations in MG’s pipeline.

MG Sigma Platform Body Styles

The MG Sigma platform is capable of becoming the base for any of the following body styles:

Body Style

Examples

Hatchback

Tata Altroz, Hyundai i20

Notchback (sub-4m sedan)

Maruti Dzire, Tata Tigor

Small SUV

Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon

Mid-Size SUV

Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos

Large SUV

Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari

Off-roader

Mahindra Thar, Force Gurkha

Mid-size sedan

Honda City, Hyundai Verna

Sports Car

Mazda MX-5, BMW Z4

The modular platform can transform into pretty much any imaginable body form allowing MG the flexibility to adapt to evolving market demands. For instance, if the demand for sedans increases, MG can quickly bring a sedan to market. If there’s demand for a sports car, MG can launch a new sports car with a very short turn-around time.

MG Sigma Platform Powertrain Options

That’s not all. MG are working on a new generation of powertrains for the future and all of those will work with the Sigma platform. The new frame can accommodate normal petrol, turbo petrol, petrol hybrid as well as electric drivetrains. It’s unclear at the moment if MG are also working on diesel engines for India. However, the fact that this platform is suitable even for off-roaders tells us that MG may have some new diesel engines in the pipeline. That’s because off-roaders generally need a lot of torque and diesel engines offer that by the bucket loads. Alternatively, MG could meet all that extra torque demand with electric motors - either in hybrid or all-electric format.

MG One and Sigma Technology Features

The MG One also has a flat rectangular part hiding in the bumper. So, we can say that on the technology side, at least some Sigma architecture cars could come with advanced driver assistance features such as:

  • Radar-based adaptive cruise control
  • Full automatic emergency braking
  • Lane keep assist
  • Lane change assist
  • Bline-spot monitoring
  • Automatic parallel and perpendicular parking
  • Auto-follow and crawl in traffic

In addition, we can also expect the Sigma-based cars to come with telematics features. MG have recently announced a partnership with Reliance Jio

On the packaging front, the new Sigma frame leaves up to 70% of the car’s volume to the occupants in the form of cabin or storage space.
