Kilometres to Recover or Breakeven With Honda Amaze Diesel

The Honda Amaze petrol promises a mileage of 18.6kmpl with the manual and 18.3kmpl with the automatic transmission. With an estimated Rs. 102/litre price of petrol in Delhi, it’ll cost Rs. 5.48 to cover 1km with the Amaze petrol manual and Rs. 5.57/km with the Amaze petrol automatic.

With the diesel manual, the Amaze claims to deliver 24.7kmpl while the diesel automatic only has a mileage figure of 21kmpl. At an estimated Rs. 90/litre for the diesel fuel, the Amaze diesel will have a fuel cost of 3.64/km with the manual and Rs. 4.29/km with the automatic.

Earlier, based on these ex-showroom prices and the official fuel-efficiency claims, you needed to drive the Amaze diesel manual for about 73,000 to 80,000km to recover the difference in upfront ex-showroom cost. After the August price update, you need to drive about 1.1 to 1.3 lakh km to break even on the higher upfront ex-showroom price of the diesel Amaze.

With the automatic, the situation is even worse. For the Amaze diesel automatic, the breakeven kilometre figure has almost doubled for some variants. Earlier, compared to the Amaze petrol automatic, the diesel automatic needed to be driven 84,000 to 97,000km to recover the cost. Now, you will have to drive the car for as much as 1.63 lakh km to recover that cost. With the Amaze diesel automatic, not only do you get a lower mileage figure but also lower torque and power output. With the Amaze petrol automatic, you don’t compromise much - if at all - on any of these parameters.

Note that prevailing Delhi fuel cost of Rs. 102 for petrol and Rs. 90 for diesel. These calculations are done using the official ARAI mileage figures as the baseline.

Should You Buy The Honda Amaze Diesel After Price Increase?

The numbers make the picture a lot clearer. While the petrol prices are going up, diesel is also getting expensive. And such a high premium for a diesel engine makes little sense in our opinion to go for diesel.

The benefits, however, still remain in favour of the diesel engine. For example, the diesel engine has more torque, better drivability and longer refill intervals because of the higher mileage per tank. If these factors are important to you, only then you should consider buying the Honda Amaze diesel at these prices.
