While the Jimny is only available with a normal petrol engine, the Thar gets the option of 2 turbo diesel engines and one turbo petrol engine. The Gurkha, on the other hand, is only available with a turbo diesel engine. The Gurkha is the least powerful of the lot while the Thar 2.0L turbo petrol is the most powerful SUV here. The Thar 2.0L turbo petrol also offers the most torque of the lot, at 320Nm. Meanwhile, the Jimy offers the least torque of the lot. Low end torque is absolutely essential for an off-roader as it keeps the engine from working too hard when you need to maintain momentum over rough ground without a lot of speed. While the Thar and Jimny are available with an automatic transmission, the Gurkha only comes with a manual transmission.

Before we compare the off-road specs of the Jimny, Thar and Gurkha, let’s take a quick look at what approach angle, departure angle and breakover angle mean. Approach angle is the maximum upward angle of an inclined surface that your SUV can drive over. An SUV with a higher approach angle can climb steeper slopes than an SUV with a lower approach angle. Departure angle is similar to approach angle, except it is measured at the back of your SUV. Hence, a car with greater departure angle can clear steeper declines without brushing the underside of the vehicle. The breakover angle is an apex formed by the vehicle's middle and the angles toward the rear and front wheels. A car will tip or even turtle if it crosses a surface that is high enough to cause the wheels to lose traction and even lose contact with the road surface.

Of the 3 SUVs here, the Thar has the best approach and breakover angle, meaning it is unlikely to scrape its underside while going up a steep incline, or lose traction or topple over at the apex of an incline. The Gurkha has the least departure angle, at 25 degrees, while the Jimny has the highest at 50 degrees. While Maruti Suzuki haven’t revealed the water wading capacity of the Jimny 5 Door, the Gurkha can cross a stream that’s 700mm deep while the Thar can only cross a stream that’s 650mm deep.

All 3 SUVs get 4-wheel-drive as standard along with a low range transfer case that offers 2 High, 4 High and 4 Low. While the Gurkha continues to offer front and rear locking differentials in its latest generation, the Jimny gets a limited slip differential that relies on the brakes for optimum traction. Meanwhile, the Thar gets a brake-locking differential at the front axle while a mechanical brake-locking differential is available as an option on the LX diesel variant.
