Hyundai Aura Diesel Variants Removed From Website | V3Cars

Hyundai have removed the diesel variants of the Aura from their India website. The compact sedan is now only available with normal petrol, petrol-CNG and turbo petrol engine options. We do not expect Hyundai to relaunch the Aura diesel as the emission norms for cars are set to get stricter.

Hyundai Aura Diesel Discontinued?

Hyundai have officially pulled the plug on the 1.2L turbo diesel engine of the Aura. The B2 sedan segment offered a slew of diesel options a couple of years ago like the Dzire diesel and Aspire diesel. But ever since BS6 emission norms came into effect, the Aura became the only other B2 sedan apart from the Aspire and Amaze with a diesel engine. As Ford have exited the country and Hyundai have discontinued the Aura diesel, the Honda Amaze is currently the only diesel B2 segment sedan in India.

Bigger Push For CNG Fuel

While the Aura diesel is now discontinued, Hyundai are betting big on CNG-powered vehicles. The Hyundai Aura is already available with a petrol-CNG option and Hyundai recently also added the top-spec Asta variant to the CNG range. Hyundai are currently working on the Grand i10 Nios facelift and we expect a design refresh for the Aura sedan as well.

Is This The End Of Small-Displacement Diesel Engines?

We have seen even smaller displacement diesel engines like the 793cc Celerio diesel and 1.05L Tiago diesel. However, they were discontinued soon after their launch owing to multiple factors. Hyundai’s 1.2L turbo diesel engine was the last small capacity diesel engine that was available on sale. Making matters worse, the upcoming emission norms are likely to kill Honda’s 1.5L i-DTEC diesel engine that is currently offered in the Amaze and City. Furthermore, Hyundai will also discontinue the 1.5L diesel engine in the i20 whereas it will remain on sale with the Venue and Sonet. Hence, we can safely assume that the upcoming emission norms will be the last nail in the coffin for small-displacement diesel engines.
