Discontinued DCT Equipped Cars In India | V3Cars
Lately, several car manufacturers are offering their new cars with a dual-clutch automatic transmission or DCT. The latest mass-market car to get a DCT transmission is the Tata Altroz. While DCTs are now more polished and reliable than ever before, the earlier versions were notorious for failing in our conditions, causing owners to spend a hefty sum for repairs. Gradually, cars equipped with unreliable DCTs lost favour with customers before being pulled off the market altogether.
Here, we bring you a list of cars that used to get DCT automatic transmission but are now discontinued due to various reasons.
1. Volkswagen Polo GT 1.2L Petrol
Almost all cars from the Volkswagen Auto Group sold in India used to get a DCT automatic transmission, which they called DSG. However, despite being good with shifts, they were infamous for their poor reliability and high maintenance costs. The Polo GT with a 1.2L turbo petrol engine was one such car. It used to come with a 7-speed DCT automatic transmission.

During the transition to BS6 emission norms, Volkswagen replaced this powertrain with a new 1.0L turbo petrol engine mated to a 6-speed torque converter (TC) automatic transmission. Now, VW have stopped Polo production altogether and there are no plans for a replacement model.
2. Volkswagen Vento 1.2L Petrol
The Vento, which is essentially a sedan version of the Polo, was offered with the same turbo petrol-DCT powertrain. The Vento too was powered by a 1.2L turbo petrol engine mated to a 7-speed DCT automatic transmission in the BS4 era. It was later replaced with the 1.0L turbo petrol engine mated to a 6-speed TC automatic transmission. Along with the Polo, production of the Vento has been stopped and the upcoming Virtus is all set to replace it.

3. Volkswagen Vento 1.5L Diesel
During the BS4 era, Volkswagen offered the Vento with a 1.5L diesel engine mated to a 7-speed DCT automatic transmission. However, after the transition to BS6 norms, it met the same fate as the Polo and Vento petrol DCT. After BS6 norms came into effect, Volkswagen discontinued all their diesel cars and there was no replacement for the Vento diesel.

4. Volkswagen Ameo 1.5L Diesel
The Volkswagen Ameo was a subcompact sedan which rivalled the Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Ford Figo , Aspire and the Hyundai Xcent. It was offered with a 1.0L normal petrol and a 1.5L diesel engine. The diesel engine, which was also used in the Vento, came with the option of a 7-speed DCT automatic transmission. However, due to BS6 norms and low sales, Volkswagen shut down the production of the Ameo entirely. Currently, there is no replacement planned for the Ameo.
5. Skoda Rapid 1.5L Diesel
The Rapid was Skoda’s version of the Vento. It was offered with the same 1.5L diesel engine and 7-speed DCT automatic transmission as the aforementioned cars. With BS6 norms kicking in, Skoda pulled the plug from the Rapid diesel and sold it as a petrol-only sedan until this year. Now, the Rapid is discontinued and the new Slavia has replaced it, albeit with 2 petrol and no diesel engines.
6. Ford Aspire 1.5L Petrol
The Ford Aspire was offered with a 1.5L normal petrol engine mated to a 6-speed DCT automatic transmission. This powertrain was later discontinued during the transition to BS6 norms. while the 1.2L normal petrol and the 1.5L diesel engine soldeired on. The 1.2L petrol engine eventually got a 6-speed TC automatic transmission. Last year, Ford shut their production facilities in India and hence, the Aspire is no more on sale.
7. Ford Figo 1.5L Petrol
The 2nd gen Ford Figo was essentially the hatchback version of the Aspire and used the same powertrain. It too was offered with a 1.5L normal petrol engine mated to a 6-speed DCT automatic transmission, which was later discontinued. The Figo continued with the 1.2L normal petrol and the 1.5L diesel engine in the BS6 era, before Ford pulled out of the Indian market.

8. Ford EcoSport 1.5L Petrol
The EcoSport was the car that first utilised the 1.5L normal petrol Dragon series engine. It was offered with a 6-speed DCT automatic transmission as standard. The same powertrain later made its way into the Figo and the Aspire. When the EcoSport received its mid-life update in 2017, Ford replaced the DCT with a 6-speed TC automatic transmission to price it more attractively. The EcoSport is no longer on sale as the American carmaker has left our country.

9. MG Hector 1.5L Petrol
The MG Hector gets a 1.5L turbo petrol engine. Along with the 6-speed manual transmission, the Hector 1.5L petrol was offered with the option of a 6-speed DCT and a CVT automatic transmission. MG Motor discontinued the DCT transmission option last year. Both of these automatic transmission options were available at the same price for their respective variants. Hence, we believe that low sales could be the reason for the discontinuation of the DCT automatic transmission. The Hector petrol now gets the option of manual and CVT automatic transmission only.
10. MG Hector Plus 1.5L Petrol
MG Hector Plus is the 6/7 seater version of the Hector. It gets the same engine options as the Hector. The 1.5L turbo petrol engine of the Hector Plus too was offered with a 6-speed DCT and CVT automatic transmission, apart from the 6-speed manual transmission. Citing the low demand for DCT-type automatic transmission, MG Motor discontinued this transmission option in the Hector Plus. The Hector Plus 1.5L turbo-petrol now comes with the option of a manual and CVT-type automatic transmission.
