5-Door Maruti Jimny Details Leaked

5-Door Maruti Jimny Details Leaked | V3Cars

The 5-Door Suzuki Jimny is easily one of the most anticipated cars in the Indian carmaker. While Maruti has been tight-lipped about its development, a recent leak has revealed details of the upcoming SUV.

The 5-door is likely to be based on the Jimny Sierra variant that was showcased in India at the Auto Expo 2020. Compared to the standard Jimny, the Jimny Sierra is 355mm longer, 170mm wider and 5mm taller while the wheelbase is identical at 2250mm. Earlier this year, a LWB version of the Jimny was spotted testing in Europe. Reports suggest that it was a chassis test mule for the 5-door Jimny.

As per the leaked information, the 5-door Jimny will be even longer than the Jimny Sierra, the bigger of the two Jimnys. It will also have a longer wheelbase while the height and width will remain unchanged. Here is a detailed comparison:

Under the hood, the 5-door Jimny will be powered by the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine as the 3-door model. It makes 102PS and 130Nm mated to a 5-speed MT and 4-speed AT. Maruti already offers this petrol engine on some cars like the Vitara Brezza, S-Cross, Ertiga and XL6. Here it makes 105PS and 138Nm mated to a 5-speed MT and a 4-speed AT. Like the 3-door version, the 5-door Jimny will also be equipped with the part-time All Grip Pro 4WD system that comes with a low-range gearbox.

To take the benefit of the sub-4m rule, Maruti might also introduce a smaller 1.2-litre petrol engine on the lower variants of the Jimny. This will help the carmaker to price the Jimny more competitively. For the uninitiated, the sub-4m rule states that a car that measures less than 4m in length and is powered by an engine of capacity less than 1.5-litre are taxed at a lower rate than other cars.

Maruti is expected to debut the 5-door Jimny by the end of this year or early 2022. Although it won’t have any direct rivals in India, it can be seen as a more affordable alternative to off-road SUVs like the Mahindra Thar and the upcoming Force Gurkha. Maruti is expected to sell the Jimny through its Nexa line of dealerships. It will be the second SUV in the Nexa lineup after the S-Cross.
