Hyundai Verna Pros & Cons

Check out pros and cons about the Hyundai Verna that are worth highlighting for a potential buyer. Here are some of the highlights of the benefits of buying the Hyundai Verna. We'll also list out the Verna drawbacks to help you make an informed buying decision.

Verna Advantanges
  • Multiple Segment Exclusive Features

The Verna has always been a fairly feature-loaded sedan and the new model adds a couple of segment-exclusive features. These features include powered driver seat, heated and ventilated front seats, hands-free boot release and front parking sensors.

  • Class-Leading ADAS Features

The new Verna is the only sedan other than the City to offer advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) in its class. Its ADAS system offers class-leading features, including safe exit, rear collision avoidance and blind spot collision avoidance assist.

  • Good Road Presence And Large Dimensions

The new Verna currently offers the longest wheelbase and is the widest of all its rivals. The presence of connected light bar at the front and connected tail lights further accentuate its width, thus offering good road presence.

  • Powerful And Fuel Efficient Turbo Petrol Engine

The new Verna offers a new 1.5L turbo petrol engine that not only offers a class leading power output of 160PS but also class-leading fuel efficiency of 20.60kmpl. The new Verna is currently the 2nd most fuel efficient C2-segment sedan after the Honda City Hybrid.

  • Attractive Pricing

The introductory prices of the new Verna are attractive, especially for the turbo petrol variants. The turbo petrol variants of the new Verna undercut the Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia by a considerable margin, despite offering more power and ADAS features.

Verna Disadvantanges
  • CVT Not Available With Lower S Variant

Hyundai offer the continuously variable transmission (CVT) option with only the SX and SX(O) variants. We think that Hyundai should have offered the CVT option with the lower S variant as well, which is otherwise fairly feature loaded for its asking price.

  • Adaptive Cruise Control Not Offered With CVT And Turbo Manual

While the new Verna offers ADAS features in the top variants equipped with the normal petrol-CVT and turbo petrol-manual, adaptive cruise control with stop and go traffic assist is exclusive to the turbo petrol DCT powertrain. The Verna’s arch rival — the Honda City — offers adaptive cruise control with stop and go traffic assist even with the manual transmission.

  • Base Model Lacks Crucial Safety Features

While the new Verna is currently the only sedan in its segment to offer 6 airbags as standard, its base variant lacks a couple of safety features that the rivals offer. These features include electronic stability control, tyre pressure monitoring system, hill start assist and traction control.

  • Acceptable Ground Clearance

The new Verna offers a ground clearance of 165mm, which is acceptable by sedan standards. However, both the Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia offer 179mm of ground clearance, which will surely come in handy while covering rough roads.

  • DCT Yet To Prove Its Reliability

Dual-clutch automatic transmissions (DCT) have been on sale in the country for more than a decade now but they are not known for their long-term reliability. Hyundai’s 7-speed DCT is also yet to prove its reliability. Like most DCTs, it is prone to excessive heating and wear and tear in the long term.

  • Missing Features

While the new Verna is undoubtedly the most feature loaded sedan in its segment, it lacks a couple of features that you may expect from a car at this price point. These features include automatic wipers, sunglass holder, 360-degree parking camera, puddle lamps, split folding rear seatbacks and a full-colour instrument cluster.
