What Are The Pros And Cons Of Mahindra XUV300 Diesel?

The pros or advantages of Mahindra XUV300 diesel are:

  • 5-star GNCAP safety rating
  • Best-in-class wheelbase of 2600mm with the widest body are the ingredients of a roomy cabin
  • Best-in-class power and torque output of 117PS and 300Nm
  • Notable features like front parking sensors, rear disc brakes, 2-zone auto AC, tyre position display, sunroof, 6 airbags, projector headlamps, steering feel adjustment, TPMS, cruise control and keyless entry
  • Very low km-to-breakeven figures for the diesel engine with certain variants after you factor in the torque advantage of the diesel engine

The Mahindra XUV300 diesel has the following shortcomings or problems:

  • Silently removed features after launch like knee airbag, rear fog lamps, door warning lights, boot lamp, 3-point seatbelt for centre rear seat, seatbelt warning for rear seats, 17-inch alloys, heated outside mirrors; these were available at the time of launch
  • Besides feature deletion, shuffling features between variants also add to the confusion for potential customers
  • Lowest-in-segment ground clearance of 180mm and smallest-in-segment boot space measuring 257 litres

What Is The Price Of Mahindra XUV300 Diesel Variants?

Just like the petrol-manual powertrain, the 2022 Mahindra XUV300 diesel-manual is also available in all 4 variants with a manual transmission. The diesel-manual variants cost between Rs. 9.60 lakh and Rs. 13.23 lakh. Similarly, the diesel-automatic powertrain is also available in the same W6 and W8 (O) variants with an ex-showroom price of Rs. 11.70 lakh and Rs. 13.92 lakh, respectively. The XUV300 diesel-automatic variants cost Rs. 68,701 to Rs. 1.32 lakh more than the diesel-manual variants.

The price gap between the petrol and diesel powertrains is a little higher in the case of high W4 manual, W8 manual and W6 automatic. It’s worth noting that the W8 diesel-manual justifies the gap better than the other 2 expensive diesel variants as it gets the sunroof, which is not available with the W8 petrol.

Mahindra XUV300 Petrol Vs Diesel - Should You Buy XUV300 Petrol Or Diesel?

The ex-showroom price difference between the XUV300 petrol and diesel variants varies between Rs. 38,000 and Rs. 1.20 lakh. We know that the diesel engines have better fuel efficiency and lower fuel costs in most cities. Considering the December 2022 fuel prices in Delhi, XUV300 manual buyers can expect to recover this higher upfront cost in 30,000km to 95,000km depending on the variant. With the automatic transmission, the price gap is Rs. 85,500 to Rs. 1.20 lakh. With the fuel price and fuel efficiency differences, you can expect to recover this price gap in 75,000km to 1.05 lakh kilometres.

Note: It’s worth mentioning that the W8 diesel-manual also gets sunroof, which is not available with the W8 petrol-manual. We’ve not factored this into these calculations.

If you also value the performance of a XUV300’s diesel engine like higher torque and slightly higher power, then you should also take that into account. Once we take that into our algorithm, we find that the km-to-breakeven figure drops down to 5,500km - 36,500km depending on the variant and powertrain of your choice. In fact, with the W6 diesel-manual, the performance benefit more than justifies the price gap over the W6 petrol-manual powertrain. So, the km-to-breakeven calculation is not applicable in this case.

We hope this calculation helps you decide which engine is suitable for you based on your usage and running.

Mahindra XUV300 Diesel W4 - Base Model Features & Review

The base W4 variant of the Mahindra XUV300 diesel costs Rs. 9.60 lakh (ex-showroom). It has the following notable standard features:

  • Power mirrors
  • All power windows
  • 16-inch steel wheels
  • Rear disc brakes
  • Manual central locking
  • Steering-feel adjustment
  • Day/night inside mirror
  • Tyre pressure monitoring system (TMPS)
  • LED tail lamps
  • Tyre position indicator
  • Idle start/stop
  • Body-coloured bumpers, mirrors and door handles

Considering the price of the base variant, it’s missing a bunch of must-have features, which are essential for a decent ownership experience. We believe it should have had the following features:

  • Remote central locking
  • Music system
  • Steering-mounted controls
  • Wheel covers
  • Front armrest

The W6 variant offers far better value than the W4 and also adds some must-have features. So, we’ll suggest skipping the W4 variant for the W6.

Mahindra XUV300 Diesel W4 vs W6 Variant - Price & Feature Comparison

The W6 variant of the XUV300 costs Rs. 10.38 lakh with the manual transmission and Rs. 11.70 lakh (ex-showroom) with the automatic. The W6 diesel-manual is Rs. 77,651 more expensive than the base model while the automatic costs another Rs. 1.32 lakh. For this additional sum, you get the following notable features:

  • Music system
  • Steering-mounted controls
  • Remote central locking
  • Full wheel covers
  • Sunroof

This variant is still missing some key features like:

  • Projector headlamps
  • LED DRLs
  • Cruise control
  • Split rear seatbacks
  • Rear washer wiper
  • Rear defogger
  • Touchscreen infotainment
  • Front and rear armrests

Because of an expensive feature like the sunroof, the W6 diesel more than justifies the upgrade from the W4 to W6. Moreover, it also adds some must-have features. So, for budget buyers considering the XUV300 diesel-manual, the W6 is the best variant.

For diesel-automatic buyers, this is the most affordable variant of the XUV300 with the automatic transmission. It costs Rs. 1.32 lakh more than the W6 diesel. For an AMT-type automatic transmission, this price jump is too big. So, you should only buy the W6 diesel-automatic if you can’t stretch your budget further.

  • Split rear seatbacks

  • Premium upholstery
  • Power folding mirrors
  • Auto wipers
  • 2-zone auto AC
  • Auto headlamps
  • Keyless entry with push-button start/stop
  • Adjustable rear headrests

Because of the extremely value-for-money pricing of the W6 diesel-manual, the W8 appears to barely justify the upgrade over the W6. However, incrementally, it justifies the upgrade from the base W4 variant.

The W8 variant is suitable for buyers who want a richer ownership experience from the XUV300 diesel and this upgrade is worth considering for XUV300 diesel-manual buyers. So, despite offering a slightly poorer value for money than the W6 variant, the W8 earns our top recommendation for XUV300 diesel-manual buyers.

Mahindra XUV300 Diesel W8 vs W8 (O) Variant - Price & Feature Comparison

The W8 (O) top model of the Mahindra XUV300 diesel gets manual as well as automatic transmission options. With the diesel-manual, the W8 (O) costs Rs. 13.23 lakh and with the automatic, it costs Rs. 13.92 lakh. This variant is Rs. 82,000 pricier than the lower W8 variant. The automatic is another Rs. 67,701 more expensive than the manual. For diesel-automatic buyers, the jump from W6 automatic to W8 (O) will cost Rs. 2.22 lakh more. The W8 (O) adds the following important features over the W8 trim:

  • Auto-dimming inside mirror
  • Front parking sensors
  • Telematics (AMT only)
  • Front thorax and curtain airbags
  • Machined alloy wheels
  • Leather upholstery
  • Rear armrest

From a value perspective, though, it manages to justify the jump over the W8. So, if you’re interested in some of these feel-good features, then you can consider upgrading to this variant. Otherwise, for most buyers, the W8 is a suitable choice and it earns our top recommendation.

If you’re interested in the diesel-automatic powertrain, then it’s worth noting that the jump from W6 to W8 (O) is justified in terms of value for money. So, for buyers who can afford this upgrade, the W8 (O) is a suitable choice over the W6 diesel-automatic.

Which Variant Of The Mahindra XUV300 Diesel Should You Buy?

For the Mahindra XUV300 diesel-manual buyers, the base W4 variant is not worth buying. Not only does it miss out on several must-have features, the W6 only is a small price jump away and offers a far superior value for money. The W6 is the most value for money option available in the XUV300 diesel-manual lineup. The W8 justifies the upgrade from the base variant but doesn’t offer a stellar VFM score compared to the W6 diesel-manual. So, if you want a richer ownership experience, then you’re at least not compromising on value by picking the W8 variant. For this balanced feature set and a decent value for money, the W8 is our top recommendation for XUV300 diesel-manual buyers.

From there, the jump to W8 (O) is worth considering from a value for money perspective. However, it mostly adds good-to-have features. So, you should consider it only if you find its unique features important.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Mahindra XUV300 Diesel?

Compared to other turbo diesel B2-segment SUVs, the XUV300’s power and torque output are better than its rivals. However, it’s worth noting that the XUV300 diesel is also a heavy vehicle. So it may not feel like it’s that much faster as its torque-to-weight ratio is only a little bit better than the Venue’s. The efficiency figures of the XUV300 diesel are acceptable. However, the WRV’s 23.7kmpl for diesel-manual and Nexon’s 22.07kmpl for diesel-automatic are a fair bit higher than the XUV300’s diesel mileage numbers.

What Are The Dimensions Of The Mahindra XUV300?

In terms of dimensions, the XUV300 is the widest car in its class with the longest wheelbase. These specifications suggest that the XUV300 has a roomier cabin than its rivals. However, pushing the axles too far apart does eat into its boot, which is the smallest among B2-segment SUVs. Among diesel SUVs, the Sonet offers a larger 392L boot space. The other disappointing number on the XUV300’s spec sheet is its ground clearance, which stands at 180mm and is barely adequate to put it across the ‘SUV’ line. The Sonet and Nexon offer a much higher ground clearance measure 205mm and 209mm, respectively.
