What Are The Pros And Cons Of Jeep Meridian Diesel?

The pros or advantages of Jeep Meridian diesel are:

  • The Jeep badge is synonymous with off-roading and SUVs; it vouches for the Meridian’s SUV genes
  • A good number of features in the top variant such as a 360-degree camera, power front seats, power boot lid, 2-zone AC, LED projector headlamps, reclining and split-folding 2nd and 3rd-row seats with AC vents, ventilated front seats, 6 airbags and a panoramic sunroof
  • A healthy 214mm ground clearance
  • Option of 4-wheel drive
  • Option of manual transmission for those who want the mechanical feel of an H-pattern shift lever

The Jeep Meridian diesel has the following shortcomings or problems:

  • ADAS features like adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance and more are not available in any variant
  • The automatic transmission carries a higher-than-usual premium over the manual variants
  • The base variant doesn’t get many features we expect from a Rs. 30.0 lakh SUV such as cruise control (available with automatic only), ventilated front seats, panoramic sunroof, power driver seats, 360-degree camera
  • Can’t match the bulkier, body-on-frame, 3-row SUVs in terms of road presence

What Is The Price Of Jeep Meridian Diesel Variants?

The Meridian is available in 2 variants with diesel-manual and diesel-automatic powertrains. With the diesel-manual powertrain, the Limited and Limited (O) variants cost Rs. 29.90 lakh and Rs. 32.40 lakh, respectively. The automatic transmission carries a fairly high premium of Rs. 1.90 lakh. With the automatic transmission, the Meridian Limited costs Rs. 31.80 lakh and the Meridian Limited (O) costs Rs. 34.30 lakh. The Meridian Limited (O) automatic is also available with 4WD and costs Rs. 36.95 lakh, which is Rs. 2.65 lakh higher than the Limited (O) diesel automatic.

While the Limited variant of the Meridian also seems fairly well equipped, you might miss a few features like:

  • ADAS (Advanced driver assistance systems)
  • Cruise control (not available with manual transmission)
  • Power driver seat
  • 360-degree camera
  • Ventilated front seats
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Cooled storage
  • Illuminated glovebox

Between the manual and the automatic, we believe the automatic makes more sense. This is because the Meridian Limited diesel-manual doesn’t even get cruise control, which is a basic feature missing in this car considering its ex-showroom price. However, if you can accommodate the higher variant in your budget, then you should do so. At an ex-showroom price of more than Rs. 30.0 lakh, you should expect more feel-good features, which are missing in this variant.

The Limited (O) gets several features, which are almost must-have for a car at this price point. So, for a good ownership experience, we’ll suggest buying the Limited (O). Between the manual and automatic, the automatic is an easy choice even though it seems a little expensive over the manual. However, an automatic transmission is essential even for chauffeur-driven customers. The automatic transmission makes it easy even for the car owners to occasionally drive if needed without the hassle of gear changes.

The top variant of the Meridian also gets the option of 4-wheel drive with the automatic transmission. It costs Rs. 36.95 lakh and is Rs. 2.65 lakh more than the 2WD automatic. It also gets drive modes and hill descent control. If you expect to drive in sand, snow or slush, then you can consider the Limited (O) with the 4-wheel drive. It’s reasonably priced over the 2WD model and worth considering for potential buyers.

Which Variant Of The Jeep Meridian Diesel Should You Buy?

For the Jeep Meridian diesel buyers, we’ll outright suggest skipping the Limited manual. Even the Limited automatic doesn't get several must-have features, which we expect from a Rs. 30.0 lakh car. So, we strongly suggest buying the Limited (O) automatic for a good overall ownership experience. You can decide based on your needs if you should buy the Limited (O) automatic with the 4-wheel drive or not.

What Are The Engine Specifications Of The Jeep Meridian Diesel?

In terms of the engine specs, the front-wheel-drive Meridian has a much better power- and torque-to-weight ratio than the Gloster’s base engine. The Gloster is much heavier with its body-on-frame construction and a rear-wheel drivetrain. For regular driving, the Meridian will feel much quicker because of this. Jeep have also revealed the Meridian’s mileage figures, which are around 15 - 16kmpl. The Gloster’s mileage figures aren’t available but we can’t expect it to offer better real-world mileage than the Meridian, which is a fair bit lighter than the Gloster.
