Altroz Advantanges
Only Diesel Hatchback On Sale
The Tata Altroz is currently the only diesel hatchback on sale in the country. Ever since the BS6 phase-2 emission norms came into action, Hyundai pulled the plug on the diesel variants of the i20, leaving the Altroz the only diesel-powered hatchback. Furthermore, the diesel variants carry a reasonable price premium over the normal petrol and turbo petrol variants of the Altroz.
4 Powertrain Options
The Altroz offers a choice of 4 powertrain options — 1.2L normal petrol manual, 1.2L normal petrol dual-clutch automatic, 1.2L turbo petrol manual and 1.5L turbo diesel. Its powertrain options are far more than its competition, which include the Baleno, Glanza and i20.
Well Priced And Feature-packed XZ Variant
The XZ variant of the Altroz is well-priced and offers good value for money, It also comes packed with features such as height-adjustable front seatbelts, adjustable front and rear headrests, projector headlights, auto headlights, rain-sensing wipers, rear AC vents, ambient lighting and touchscreen infotainment system.
Reasonable Premium For Automatic, Turbo Petrol And Diesel Options
The Tata Altroz charges a reasonable premium of Rs. 55,000 - Rs. 67,000 for the turbo petrol engine and Rs. 1.10 lakh for the dual-clutch automatic transmission over the normal petrol manual powertrain. Furthermore, even the 1.5L turbo diesel engine commands a reasonable premium of Rs. 1.25 lakh over the normal petrol engine.
5 Star Global NCAP Rating
The Tata Altroz is crowned the safest hatchback presently on sale in the country with a 5-star safety rating from Global NCAP. The Altroz’s arch rival — the Hyundai i20 only secured a 3-star rating in the Global NCAP crash test.
Altroz Disadvantanges
Low Power And Torque Output Of Turbo Petrol Engine
The 1.2L turbo petrol engine of the Tata Altroz produces the lowest power and torque in its segment. Its turbo petrol engine produces 110PS of power and 140Nm of torque. The i20, on the other hand, offers 120PS of power and 172Nm of torque with its 1.0L turbo petrol engine.
No Automatic Option With Turbo Petrol Or Diesel
Neither the turbo petrol engine nor the turbo diesel engine of the Altroz offer the option of an automatic transmission. Both engines come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The Hyundai i20 offers the option of a dual clutch automatic with the 1.0L turbo petrol engine.
Stripped-Down Lower Variants Lack Must-Have Features
The lower XE and XE Plus variants of the Tata Altroz lack a couple of must-have features. The XE and XE Plus variants lack features such as power-adjustable side mirrors, steering-mounted controls and day/night IRVM. Furthermore, the lower variants of the Altroz come with 165-section 14-inch wheels, which look odd given the premium positioning of the Altroz hatchback.
6-Month Service Interval Is Too Short
All Tata cars come with a service interval of every 6 months, which is lower than the industry standard of 1 year or 10,000km. The 6 month service interval is too short and it becomes a hassle to visit the service centre twice a year, especially if you live in a remote location.
