Volvo recently confirmed that it will launch its first EV, the XC40 Recharge, in India in October 2021. In the same event, the carmaker also revealed that the recently unveiled C40 will be the second EV to go on sale in India and it will be launched in 2022.

Volvo C40 Recharge

Although the C40 is the first Volvo car to designed as a pure EV, it shares its underpinnings with the XC40 Recharge as it is based on the CMA platform. The C40 is essentially a coupe SUV coupe version of the XC40 Recharge. As a result, it looks similar to the donor SUV till the B-pillar post that it gets a sloping roofline. At the back, it gets a jutted out tail, a design trait synonymous with coupe SUVs. To set itself apart from the XC40 Recharge, the C40 also gets slightly updated headlamps that taper on the inside flanking the wider grille panel and a redesigned front bumper.

On the inside, the C40 looks identical to the XC40 Recharge. It gets the same portrait-oriented Googles Android-powered touchscreen unit sitting in the centre of the dashboard flanked by the vertical AC vents. Other features on the C40 are also expected to be similar to the XC40 Recharge including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

The C40 replicates the XC40 Recharge under the hood as well. It gets the same dual-motor setup mounted on each axle with a combined output of 408PS and 660Nm. Volvo claims it can go from 0-100kmph in 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 180kmph. It draws electricity from a 78kWh battery pack (same as XC40 Recharge) and has a claimed range of 420km (WLTP-World harmonized Light-duty vehicles Test Procedure). It also supports fast charging and can be juiced up from 0 to 80 per cent in 40 minutes.

When launched in India, expect the C40 Recharge to be priced around Rs 70 lakh. Going forward, the carmaker plans to launch on EV in India every year. Volvo India plans to have 80 per cent of its total sales coming from EVs by 2025. This announcement is in line with the brand’s global goal of having an EV only lineup by 2030.
