January 2023 is set to be a busy month of carmakers. Apart from participating at the 2023 Auto Expo, several carmakers are set to launch new and updated products this month. Here is a list of cars and SUVs that are set to go on sale in January 2023.

Hyundai Ioniq 5

Ioniq 5

Hyundai recently unveiled the Ioniq 5 in the Indian market and also commenced bookings for the electric crossover SUV for a token amount of Rs. 1.0 lakh. The India-spec Ioniq 5 comes with a 72.6kWh battery pack. It offers 217PS of power and 350Nm of torque along with an ARAI-certified range of 631km on a single charge.

Take a look at the key features of the Ioniq 5:

  • Advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS)
  • Vehicle to load charging (V2L)
  • 20-inch alloy wheels
  • LED headlights and tail lights
  • Bose sound system
  • 12.3-inch full-colour LCD display
  • Magnetic dashboard
  • Power-adjustable driver and co-passenger seat
  • Power-sliding rear seats

We expect Hyundai to price the Ioniq 5 at Rs. 50.0 lakh if it goes on sale via the completely knocked down (CKD) route. If Hyundai bring the Ioniq 5 as a completely built unit (CBU), we expect the Ioniq 5 to retail at Rs. 55.0 lakh ex-showroom.

Mahindra Thar 2WD

Mahindra have already started dispatching the Thar 2WD to their dealerships and the launch is likely to take place in January 2023.  The 1.5L turbo diesel engine in the Thar 2WD produces 117PS of power and 300Nm of torque. The Thar 2WD with the 1.5L diesel engine comes with a 6-speed manual transmission. The Thar 2WD will also come with a 2.0L turbo petrol engine, producing 150PS of power and 320Nm of torque. 

Mahindra are likely to offer the following features with the Thar 2WD:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Touchscreen infotainment system
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Cruise control
  • All terrain tyres
  • Electronically-adjustable ORVMs
  • LED DRLs
  • Fog lamps
  • Roof mounted speakers

The Mahindra Thar turbo diesel 2WD variant is likely to cost under Rs. 10.0 lakh (ex-showroom) since its engine fits under 1500cc. This could make it a potential rival to the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-Door.

Mahindra XUV400

XUV400

Mahindra revealed the XUV400 in September 2022. The electric SUV is set to go on sale in January 2023. Mahindra are likely to offer the XUV400 in 3 variants — base, EP and EL. Mahindra XUV400 comes with a 39.5kWh battery pack that powers a front-mounted electric motor. It produces 150PS of power and 310Nm of torque. The XUV400 offers a claimed range of 456km on a single charge. 

Take a look at the notable features of the XUV400:

  • 16-inch alloy wheels
  • Projector headlights
  • LED DRLs
  • LED tail lights
  • Touchscreen infotainment system
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Electric sunroof
  • 6 airbags

The XUV400’s prices are likely to undercut the Tata Nexon EV Max by a good margin. We expect the prices of the XUV400 to start from Rs. 16 lakh to Rs. 18 lakh ex-showroom. It will rival other electric SUVs like the MG ZS EV, BYD Atto 3 and Hyundai Kona Electric.

MG Hector Facelift

Hector Facelift

MG are likely to launch the Hector facelift in January 2023. The updated SUV will come with a fresh front end design with a larger chrome grille and tweaked headlights and tail lights. The big change, however, will be on the inside, as the new Hector will feature a segment-largest 14.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Ambient lighting

In terms of powertrain, the Hector facelift is likely to continue with the same set of engine and transmission options as before. The 1.5L turbo petrol is likely to retain its manual and CVT-automatic options. Currently, the MG Hector with the 2.0L diesel engine only gets a 6-speed manual transmission. We do not expect MG to offer the Hector facelift with a diesel-automatic option any time soon.

Mercedes-Benz E53 AMG Cabriolet

E53 Cabriolet

Mercedes-Benz are all set to launch the E53 AMG 4-matic+ Cabriolet on January 6. It is set to become the 4th ‘53 AMG’ badged offering in the lineup after the launch of the E53 AMG, GLE 53 AMG and EQS 53 AMG. It comes with a 3.0L V6 turbo petrol engine that produces 435PS of power and comes coupled with a generator that further offers 21PS of power and 250Nm of torque boost. The E53 AMG Cabriolet is capable of sprinting from a standstill to 100kmph in just 4.6 seconds.

BMW X1

X1

BMW India are likely to launch the next-gen X1 crossover in January 2023. A few BMW dealerships have already started accepting unofficial bookings for the new X1. The new X1 comes with an updated design along with slightly bigger dimensions. The engine options now also incorporate a 48V mild hybrid setup and the new X1 also offers an all-electric drivetrain, called the iX1. The iX1 is likely to hit our shores in late 2023. The new-gen BMW X1 will rival Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40.

BMW 7-Series

i7

BMW will also launch the 7-series in India in January 2023. The new-gen 7-series is based on the CLAR platform and it also comes with an all-electric version, named the i7. The new 7-series comes with 3.0L turbo petrol, 3.0L turbo diesel and 4.4L turbo petrol engines. All engines come with a 48V mild-hybrid support and 4-wheel-drive as standard.
