Toyota-Badged Maruti WagonR Spotted Testing | V3Cars
As we were waiting for Toyota to launch the rebadged versions of the Maruti Ciaz and the Eritga, a recent spy shot has confirmed that Toyota is also working on a rebadged version of the Maruti WagonR. While the front and rear profile had no Toyota badging, the Toyota badges on its wheels gave away the hatchback’s true identity.
As one would expect, the Toyota-badged car looks similar to the WagonR when seen from the rear and side, save for a redesigned rear bumper. The most noticeable change comes at the front where it features a new design that looks similar to what we have earlier seen on the XL5 test mules. It gets Venue-like top mounted turn indicators with bumper-mounted headlamps and fog lamps.
Since the test mule featured here was equipped with LED headlamps, LED fog lamps and bigger 15-inch alloy wheels, it could be the top-spec variant of the Toyota hatchback. It is to be noted that the wheels seen in the spy shots look similar to the wheels Maruti offers on the Ignis.
The XL5 is touted to be a more premium version of the WagonR which will be sold through Nexa dealerships. However, there is a possibility that the Maruti XL5 was never in the works and it was only the Toyota branded WagonR that was being tested all this while.
Save for the exterior styling, expect the Toyota-badged hatchback to be identical to the Maruti WagonR. Features on offer include manual AC, power windows, remote keyless entry, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, tilt-adjustable steering, electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and rear parking sensors. Toyota might offer some additional features on the hatchback in the form of an auto AC and a parking camera.
Under the hood, the WagonR is available with two petrol engines to choose from. A 1.0-litre naturally aspirated engine making 68PS and 90Nm and a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine making 83PS and 113Nm. The 1.0-litre engine is offered with a CNG fuel option as well making 59PS and 78Nm. Both the engines are mated to a 5-speed MT and a 5-speed AMT transmission. However, expect the Toyota-badged WagonR to be offered with the 1.2-litre engine only. Maruti claims the 1.2-litre WagonR has a fuel economy of 20.52kmpl against 21.79kmpl of 1.0-litre WagonR.
Once launched, the new hatchback will be Toyota’s most affordable offering. Prices are expected to be similar to the Maruti WagonR which retails from Rs 4.80 lakh to Rs 6.33 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It will take on the likes of the Tata Tiago, Hyundai Santro, Datsun GO, and Maruti Suzuki Celerio.
