Tesla’s DC Fast Chargers In Europe Can Charge Nexon EV In 2 Min

Tesla’s Newest European Chargers Can Refill A Nexon EV In 2 Minutes | V3Cars

While we figure out how we can increase the number of public fast charging stations to help EV adoption, Tesla are setting up crazy-fast DC fast chargers in the European region. Around mid-March 2023, a Twitter user posted images of the Tesla’s 615kW DC fast chargers in the Netherlands.

Of course, after some transmission losses, it’ll only manage to deliver around 600kW of power. But even if your car is capable of fast 600kW charging, it can’t maintain that speed as it charges up from low levels. As the battery charges up, the speed at which it can gobble up more current goes down. On the bright side, a 600kW DC fast charger has a theoretical capacity to charge up something like a Nexon EV’s 30.2kWh battery pack in 3 minutes.

However, realistically, you’ll not get that speed as all battery packs slow down charging drastically post reaching around 80%. Moreover, realistically, we won’t wait for it to reach 0% before we plug it in. So, if the Tata Nexon EV could scoop up such fast current transfer speeds, then charging the car will mostly become a 2-minute affair.

In the following image, you can see the current and voltage rating of the charger:

With the simple formula power = current * voltage, we can conclude that this charger is capable of 615kW of DC power output.

These 4th generation DC fast chargers from Tesla are getting them closer to the charging network and capability they need before they start delivering their long-haul trucks. A 30-minute charge duration is the norm in countries where electric vehicles are pretty common. Such fast charging speeds will maintain that norm for the long-haul tractor trailers as well.

It’s worth noting that Tesla intend to bring 1MW and faster DC charging at a later stage to make their Semi trucks viable for business across Europe, China, North America and the Middle East. Tata Power, too, have 250kW DC fast chargers on sale in India. They already sell these superfast chargers for electric buses and trucks, which have a huge battery pack.
