Maruti Suzuki WagonR CBG: What Is It?

The Maruti Suzuki WagonR power by compressed biomethane gas was developed at Maruti Suzuki’s R7D centre in India in 2022. The WagonR CBG was earlier showcased at the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan in May. The WagonR CBG was developed alongside the WagonR Flex Fuel to help reduce the carbon footprint in the company. Earlier, Maruti Suzuki chairman RC Bhargava stated that the country should not solely rely on EVs but instead also focus on alternative fuel options such as hybrids, CNG and CBG to reduce India’s carbon footprint.

What Is Compressed Biomethane Gas?

While CNG, or compressed natural gas, is derived from petroleum sources, CBG is obtained from the decomposition of organic matter, such as agricultural waste, sewage, and cow dung. To produce CBG, the biogas derived from the decomposition process has to undergo futher refinement to lower the amount of carbon dioxide. The process also increases the amount of methane in the gas, making it suitable for powering internal combustion engines.
