In this September 2023 car sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change in sales figures of all SUVs in India. We’ll also share our observations based on the sales data and possible reasons behind a massive increase or drop in sales, where applicable. Lastly, the table with monthly sales of all SUVs for the last 6 months will give you an idea about their 6-month sales trend.

SUV Segment September 2023 Car Sales - YoY Change

Based on the YoY comparison of the car sales data for September 2023 and September 2022, here are the top gainers and losers in terms of dispatches:
- Top Gainers:
  - Toyota Hyryder (C1-segment): Toyota's Hyryder experienced an exceptional YoY growth of 227.09%, making it the top gainer in terms of sales performance.
  - Maruti Nexa Grand Vitara (C1-segment): The Maruti Nexa Grand Vitara recorded an impressive YoY growth of 146.09%, making it one of the top gainers.
  - Mahindra XUV700 (D1-segment): Mahindra's XUV700 saw substantial YoY growth of 41.10%, indicating strong consumer interest.
  - Mahindra Thar (B2-segment): The Mahindra Thar also performed well with a YoY growth of 27.49%.
  - MG Hector + Hector Plus (D1-segment): MG's Hector and Hector Plus models had a positive YoY growth of 26.03%.
- Top Losers:
  - Citroen C3 (B2-segment): Citroen's C3 experienced the most significant decline with a YoY drop of 86.78%, making it the top loser.
  - Tata Harrier (C2-segment): The Tata Harrier faced a substantial YoY decline of 69.06%.
  - Jeep Meridian (D2-segment): Jeep's Meridian model had a YoY sales decline of 82.25%.
  - Tata Safari (D1-segment): Tata's Safari faced a considerable YoY decline of 74.58%.
  - Renault Kiger (B2-segment): The Renault Kiger also recorded a significant YoY drop in sales at 61.34%.
  - Kia Sonet (B2-segment): The Kia Sonet had a notable YoY decline of 46.36%.
MG's ZS EV (C1) and Hyundai Kona (C1) both experienced YoY sales declines of 44.66% and 38.39%, respectively
Some models like Maruti Nexa Fronx (B2) and Kia EV6 (D1) appeared in the data for September 2023, indicating new entrants in the market. In contrast, some models like Ford EcoSport (B2) and Toyota Urban Cruiser (B2) recorded no sales in both years.

Based on the MoM comparison of the car sales data for September 2023 and September 2022, here are the top gainers and losers in terms of dispatches:
- Top Gainers:
  - Honda Elevate (C1-segment): Honda Elevate saw a significant MoM increase of 101.45%, indicating a notable surge in sales.
  - Hyundai Exter (B2-segment): Hyundai Exter experienced a 16.38% MoM growth in sales, suggesting increased demand for this model.
  - Hyundai Alcazar (C2-segment): Hyundai Alcazar recorded a substantial 32.42% MoM increase in sales, indicating growing popularity.
  - MG Hector + Hector Plus (D1-segment): MG's Hector and Hector Plus models had a strong MoM increase of 28.85%.
  - Kia EV6 (D1-segment): Kia's EV6 showed a remarkable MoM growth of 257.14%, reflecting a surge in interest for electric vehicles.
  - Jeep Compass (C2-segment): Jeep Compass recorded a substantial 127.33% MoM increase in sales.
  - Nissan Magnite (B2-segment): The Nissan Magnite experienced an 8.68% MoM growth, indicating continued interest in this model.
  - Kia Sonet (B2-segment): Kia Sonet had a healthy MoM growth of 20.97%.
- Top Losers:
  - Tata Harrier (C2-segment): Tata Harrier faced a significant MoM decline of 45.17%, indicating a decrease in demand.
  - MG ZS EV (C1-segment): MG ZS EV recorded a notable MoM decrease of 45.84%, suggesting potential challenges in the electric vehicle market.
  - Tata Safari (D1-segment): Tata's Safari model had a substantial 49.36% MoM drop in sales.
  - Tata Punch (B1-segment): Tata Punch saw a MoM decrease of 10.24%.
  - Maruti Nexa Jimny (B2-segment): The Maruti Nexa Jimny had a significant MoM decline of 14.59%.

SUV models like Hyundai Alcazar (C2-segment), MG Hector + Hector Plus (D1-segment), and Kia Sonet (B2-segment) experienced MoM sales growth. This indicates that SUVs continue to dominate the market as consumers prefer larger, versatile vehicles.
The Hyundai Alcazar (C2-segment) and Hyundai Exter (B2-segment) both recorded positive MoM growth, indicating a demand for mid-size SUVs.
