Rumour: Maruti Suzuki YTB To Get A Turbo Petrol Engine

Rumour: Maruti Suzuki YTB To Offer A 1.0L Turbo Petrol Engine | V3Cars

Maruti Suzuki YTB is set to make its India debut at the 2023 Auto Expo. A new rumour in the market suggests the YTB could get a 1.0L turbo petrol engine, which was earlier seen in the Baleno RS.

Maruti Suzuki YTB To Get 1.0L Turbo Petrol Engine

Maruti Suzuki launched the Baleno RS in 2017 with the 1.0L turbo petrol engine but it was discontinued in 2020 owing to low sales. As per the latest rumour, Maruti Suzuki may reintroduce the 1.0L turbo petrol engine with the Baleno-based YTB crossover. The power and torque figures are unknown at this point. In the Baleno RS, this engine offered 102PS of power and 150Nm of torque.

Our Take On YTB’s Turbo Petrol Engine

We do not expect Maruti Suzuki to reintroduce the 1.0L turbo petrol engine, at least with the YTB. Maruti Suzuki discontinued the Baleno RS in 2020 when all other carmakers were bringing their turbo petrol engines to the market. That was a strong move from Maruti Suzuki to shun away from turbo petrol engines. If Maruti Suzuki were to reintroduce the turbo petrol engine, we believe they’d do so with a brand new product that’s targeted at enthusiasts. The YTB, on the other hand, is more of a crossover based on the Baleno aimed at buyers who prefer a higher driving position.

Secondly, as the YTB is not likely to grow much in size or weight, the 1.2L normal petrol engine seems like an apt fit for the YTB. Even though no one would say no to more power, it doesn’t seem feasible for Maruti Suzuki to re-invest millions of rupees to reintroduce the 1.0L turbo petrol engine for a product which can still do well with the 1.2L normal petrol engine. Take the Tata Punch for instance, which comes with a 1.2L normal petrol engine and does impressive sales numbers, despite being heavier than the Baleno and lacking outright performance.

However, we are not completely ruling out the possibility of Maruti Suzuki reintroducing it’s turbo petrol engine. In our opinion, Maruti Suzuki could offer the turbo petrol engines to cater to a different set of audience. For their current flagship offering, the Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki have opted for a strong-hybrid powertrain while their rivals, like the Hyundai Creta and Volkswagen Taigun, offer turbo-petrol engines in their top-spec, fully loaded variants.
