May 2023 Overall Car Sales

In this May 2023 detailed car sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change in sales figures for each car and the YoY, MoM change each car witnessed in the same month.

We’ll also include sales figures from the last 6 months to give you an idea about the 6-month trend of each car on sale in India and share our observations.

  • Speaking of consistent performers over the last 6 months, top five cars ranked by the average sales over the last 6 months are:
    1. Maruti Suzuki Baleno   (B2-Hatch, 17,160)
    2. Maruti Suzuki WagonR (B1-Hatch, 16,999)
    3. Maruti Suzuki Swift       (B1-Hatch, 16,762)
    4. Tata Nexon               (B2-SUV, 14,288)
    5. Maruti Alto/Alto K10   (A-Hatch, 13,801)
  • As it is clear from the numbers, Maruti holds the biggest market share owing to its consistently good selling cars. 4 out of 5 cars with best average sales for 6 months are from Maruti Suzuki.
  • Tata has done something right with their B2-segment SUV, the Nexon, as it stands 4th out of 77 cars on sale in the Indian market currently.
  • Disregarding the numbers of low volume cars like Marazzo and Kona Electric, the MG ZS EV was the clear winner in terms of YoY gains in May. It recorded a YoY growth of about 362.58%. The MG ZS EV also reported a 202% growth in sales in May compared to April, which is a significant growth number for the EV.
  • The 10 top-gainers in the market in the YoY comparison analysis (including all cars) are :
    1. Hyundai Tucson   (37800.00%)
    2. Kia EV6   (453.33%)
    3. MG ZS EV   (362.58%)
    4. Toyota Hilux   (361.54%)
    5. MG Gloster   (325.49)
    6. Volkswagen Tiguan (216.67%)
    7. Toyota Innova Hycross/Crysta (184.11%)
    8. Hyundai Verna (147.78%)
    9. Toyota Fortuner (143.83%)
    10. Mahindra Scorpio Classic/Scorpio-N (114.31%)
  • The top selling brand for the month of May 2023 was Maruti Suzuki, with over 97 thousand units sold, which is about 0.48% higher from the previous month of April.
  • The total sales of brands in the month of May in comparison to the total sales in April are as follows:

  • Maruti’s supremacy over the Indian car market is such that Maruti would have to lose roughly half the units in sales to match the second best-selling brand, Hyundai.
  • The Baleno from Maruti Suzuki was the best-selling model in May, with almost 18,733 units sold.
  • The manufacturer with the least units sold in May was Jeep, with just 734 units, which is an improvement of 31.54% compared to April.
  • In the last 6-9 months, we’ve witnessed a lot of action in the Indian auto industry with a bunch of new car launches, generation updates and mid-life refreshes. We can expect a lot more to happen during the rest of 2023.
