Maruti Suzuki Rule Out Diesel Altogether

Maruti Suzuki Rule Out Diesel Altogether | V3Cars

At the launch of the 2022 XL6 facelift, Maruti Suzuki ruled out the possible reintroduction of diesel engines in the future. Instead, Maruti reiterated its plans to go forward with petrol and hybrid powertrains only, owing to the decreasing segment share of diesel-powered vehicles.

Maruti Suzuki currently offer three engine options — the 1.0L K10C, 1.2L K12N and 1.5L K15C. Moving further, the brand will offer a strong hybrid powertrain co-developed with Toyota in its upcoming hybrid compact SUV.

The upcoming hybrid compact SUV from Maruti Suzuki will go up against the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. It is worth mentioning that both the Creta and the Seltos come with a diesel engine along with the choice of manual and automatic transmissions. The demand for diesel engines, however, has seen a slump over the years. And needless to say, the DPF regeneration process in modern-day diesel-powered vehicles is a daunting task even today.

The hybrid powertrain of the upcoming Maruti compact SUV is likely to offer class-leading fuel efficiency. We expect it to come close to the running cost of it’s diesel-powered rivals, given the marginal gap between the price of petrol and diesel and the high maintenance cost of diesel vehicles.

In addition to that, Maruti Suzuki are also betting big on CNG powertrains. All the aforementioned engines from Maruti Suzuki are already available with CNG option. Going further, Maruti Suzuki are likely to offer CNG options of their Nexa range of products like the Baleno, Ignis and XL6.
