Mahindra Thar 2WD Diesel Manual Spotted Ahead Of Launch In January | V3Cars

Mahindra are likely to launch a new 1.5L turbo diesel 2WD option for the Mahindra Thar. A new spy shot revealed the absence of the 4-wheel-drive selector lever in the Thar, ahead of its launch that is likely to take place in January 2023.

Mahindra Thar 1.5L Diesel 2WD

Mahindra Thar comes with a choice of 2 engine options — 2.2L turbo diesel and 2.0L turbo petrol. Hence, despite measuring under 4 metres, the Thar doesn’t take the benefits from the sub-4m taxation slab. The 1.5L 2WD variants will let the Thar start off at an affordable price and we expect Mahindra to price the base variant below the 10.0 lakh (ex-showroom) mark. The 1.5L turbo diesel engine also does duty on the Marazzo and XUV300 with the 6-speed manual whereas the XUV300 also offers the option of a 6-speed automated manual transmission. However, we expect only the manual transmission option to come with the 1.5L diesel engine. The 6-speed torque converter transmission will remain exclusively with the bigger engines of the Thar.

Mahindra Thar 2WD And Thar 5-Door Launch Timeline

Our sources confirmed that Mahindra will reveal the Thar 5-door in January 2023. We expect Mahindra to reveal the 2WD variants of the Thar alongside the unveiling of the Thar 5-door. The new 2WD variants of the Thar are likely to come at a considerably lower price tag compared to the corresponding 4WD variants. The 1.5L turbo diesel variants will have a bigger price cut, owing to lower tax impositions. With the 2WD variants, Mahindra are also likely to lure away the prospective customers of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door.
