Mahindra Thar 1.5L Diesel 2WD Specs Leaked Ahead Of Launch | V3Cars
Mahindra are set to introduce more powertrain options for the Thar SUV in January 2023. Apart from the current 2.2L turbo diesel and 2.0L turbo petrol engine options, Mahindra are set to introduce a 1.5L turbo diesel engine with 2-wheel-drive. The addition of the smaller diesel engine option will allow Mahindra to price the Thar below the Rs. 10 lakh mark as cars under 4 metres in length with diesel engines up to 1.5L belong to a lower tax bracket than cars under 4 metres with diesel engines above 1.5L.
The Mahindra Thar 1.5L turbo diesel 2WD was spotted recently and now, its specifications have leaked online. The Thar 1.5L diesel is likely to go on sale alongside the Thar 5-door in January 2023.
Mahindra Thar 1.5L 2WD Specs Leaked
The leaked document suggests that the Mahindra Thar’s 1.5L turbo diesel engine will offer 118PS of power at 3500rpm and 300Nm of torque between 1750rpm and 2500rpm. The 1.5L turbo diesel engine isn’t all new as it already powers the XUV300 and the Marazzo. The Thar 1.5L turbo diesel 2WD is likely to come with 2 transmission options — a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

Thar 2WD Likely To Get 2.0L Turbo Petrol
Apart from the 1.5L turbo diesel engine, Mahindra are also likely to offer the Thar 2WD with the 2.0L turbo petrol engine. The leaked document suggests that the Thar turbo petrol 2WD variant will have the same power and torque output as the Thar That turbo petrol 4WD variant. The 2.0L turbo petrol engine currently offers 152PS of power at 5000rpm and 300Nm of torque between 1250rpm and 3000rpm with the 6-speed manual and 320Nm of torque between 1500rpm and 3000rpm with the 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
How Will These Changes Affect Buyers?
The addition of the 1.5L turbo diesel engine with 2WD will make the That more affordable for prospective buyers. Since the Thar already fits under 4 metres in length, the 1.5L turbo diesel engine will help the SUV fit under a lower tax bracket than the 2.0L turbo diesel variants. It also serves as a more sensible option for buyers who do not plan to take their Thar off-road but are only considering it for city usage.
As for the Thar turbo petrol 2WD variant, it will remain in the same tax bracket as the 4WD variant. However, the absence of a 4-wheel drivetrain will make the 2WD variant a lot more affordable. We expect the Thar turbo petrol 2WD variant to cost under Rs. 10.0 lakh (ex-showroom) and become a potential rival to the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-Door.
