In this January 2023 car sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change in sales figures of all D-segment cars in India. Where applicable, we’ll also include our observations based on the sales data and possible reasons behind a massive increase or drop in sales. Lastly, the table with monthly sales of all D-segment cars for the last 6 months will give you an idea about the 6-month sales trend.

D-Segment Cars January 2023 Car Sales - YoY Change

  • SUVs and MPVs continue to rule the D-segment. There are only 3 sedans in the D-segment, and only 1 pick-up.
  • In fact, the top 10 best-selling D-segment cars are all SUVs or MPVs, with 4 out of the top 5 being SUVs.
  • The Mahindra Scorpio (Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic), Kia Carens, Mahindra XUV700, Toyota Fortuner and MG Hector/Hector Plus pair took the top 5 spots.
  • The Hector pair pushed the Harrier out of the 5th spot to 6th spot in January 2023.
  • The top gainer in the category was the Kia Carens MPV with a 1274% growth in the YoY comparison analysis, with just 575 units dispatched in January 2022 to almost 8,000 units in January of 2023.
  • The Carens was followed by the Toyota Fortuner with a 356% YoY growth and Hyundai Tucson with over 275% YoY growth.
  • Top notable losers in the YoY comparison were the Hyundai Alcazar with about a 51% drop in dispatches over the year, followed by the Tata Harrier and Toyota Innova with over 41% drop in sales over the past year.
  • Zero units of the Kia EV6 were dispatched in January 2023 and January 2022.

D-Segment Cars January 2023 Car Sales - MoM Change

  • In terms of MoM performance, the Scorpio sisters were the best-selling cars in the D-segment and saw a growth of 24.5% in January over December.
  • The Toyota Innova (Crysta & Hycross) was the top gainer in terms of MoM sales comparison with over 3,800% increase in dispatches compared to December.
  • All D-segment sedans witnessed a drop in sales in January compared to December.
  • All D2-segment cars, such as Hilux, C5 AirCross, Camry, Vellfire and Tiguan saw a drop in dispatches in January.
  • Amongst the mass-market cars in the segment, the Tata Safari was the top loser with 31% decline in sales, followed by the Tata Harrier with a 26% drop in January compared to December.
