Hyundai Venue Likely To Borrow Variable Geometry Turbo From Creta Diesel | V3Cars
Last week, Hyundai launched the Grand i10 Nios facelift. The updated B1-segment hatchback was not only Hyundai’s first BS6 phase 2 and real driving emission (RDE) compliant car, but also the first in its segment to meet the new emission targets ahead of the April 1, 2023 deadline. We expect Hyundai to update the rest of their portfolio, including the Venue and Creta, to comply with road driving emissions (RDE) in the next few months. Meanwhile, the Venue’s 1.5L diesel engine is also likely to get an update that could potentially increase its efficiency and performance while producing less emissions.
2023 Hyundai Venue Diesel To Get New Turbocharger
The Hyundai Venue received a facelift last year. However, the engine specifications of the current Venue were carried over from its predecessor. Hyundai offer its B2-segment SUV with a 1.2L normal petrol engine, a 1.0L turbo petrol engine and a 1.5L diesel engine. The diesel engine in question is shared with the Hyundai Creta. However, while the Creta diesel produces 115PS of power and 250Nm of torque, the Venue diesel only offers 100PS and 240Nm.

The key difference between the Creta and Venue’s diesel powertrain is their turbocharger. While the Venue uses a wastegate turbocharger, the Creta gets a variable geometry turbocharger. We expect the Venue to get the Creta’s VGT to help it meet the new emission norms.

Hyundai Venue Update: Advantages Of Switching To VGT
While wastegate turbochargers are the most commonly used turbochargers in diesel cars, carmakers have begun switching to VGTs. WGTs are smaller and offer better performance under low load conditions. However, according to a study, a VGT offers more performance and helps the engine burn fuel more cleanly than a WGT. Thus, switching to VGTs help carmakers achieve ever tightening emission norms with little to no modifications required to the engine’s internals. Hence, we can not only expect the updated Venue diesel equipped with the Creta’s VGT to offer better fuel efficiency and performance but lower emissions as well.
Meanwhile, Hyundai are likely to discontinue the i20 diesel due to low sales. The i20 diesel comes equipped with the same wastegate turbocharger as the Venue. If Hyundai discontinue the i20 diesel, they will be left with the Venue diesel as the only car in their portfolio that gets a wastegate turbocharger. Hence, it wouldn’t make sense for the carmaker to incur the costs and update the engine for just one product in the portfolio.
Likely To Get Integrated Starter Generator For Better Fuel Efficiency
Apart from the stringent BS6 phase 2 emission norms, carmakers also have to comply with CAFE-II norms. CAFE stands for corporate average fuel efficiency and it combines the weighted average fuel consumption and emissions of all the products under a brand’s portfolio. Hence, higher fuel efficiency is one of the factors that help achieve the required targets. To this effect, we expect Hyundai to introduce an integrated starter generator with the idle start/stop function.

We have seen idle start/stop features in many Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra vehicles before. Hyundai are also likely to introduce this feature to offer marginally improved fuel efficiency. While boosting fuel economy, this feature will also help in lowering the tailpipe emissions in stop and go traffic.
Updated Hyundai Venue Expected Launch Timeline
Hyundai are likely to launch the updated Venue before March 2023. It will share its 1.2L normal petrol engine with the recently-launched Grand i10 Nios facelift. The updated 1.2L normal petrol engine now complies with the updated emission norms and is E20-ready. The 1.0L turbo petrol engine that currently does duty on the Venue, Verna and i20 will also be updated for the upcoming emission norms that currently does duty on the Venue, Verna and i20.
