Hyundai Santro Discontinued — Official Communication Confirms | V3Cars

A couple of weeks ago, some rumours suggested that Hyundai have discontinued the Santro hatchback. However, Hyundai have not delisted the Santro from their India website yet. A recent media communication from Hyundai confirms that the Santro is no longer part of their India portfolio. We expect Hyundai to remove the Santro’s details from their website soon.

Here’s the statement from a recent press communication from Hyundai India:

“Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company (HMC). HMIL is India’s first smart mobility solutions provider and the number one car exporter since inception in India It currently has 10 car models across segments GRAND i10 NIOS, All New i20, i20 N Line, AURA, VENUE, Spirited New VERNA, All New CRETA, ALCAZAR, New TUCSON & KONA Electric. HMIL’s fully integrated state-of-the-art manufacturing plant near Chennai boasts of advanced production, quality, and testing capabilities.”

As expected, the Santro was not on the list of 10 Hyundai models currently on sale in the Indian market. Earlier this year, Hyundai also discontinued the Elantra sedan and also silently delisted the model from their India website.

Hyundai launched the 2nd generation Santro in 2018. However, it failed to match the older model in terms of popularity and sales. . The 1st-gen Santro, which launched back in 1998, helped the brand establish itself as the second largest carmaker in the challenging Indian market. As per reports, Hyundai sold around 1.50 lakh units of the 2nd-gen Santro and its typicalmonthly sales figure hovered in the range of 1,500 to 2,000 units a month.

The Hyundai Santro was affected with rising input costs and lack of demand for entry-level hatchbacks and stiffer competition. Since the launch of the 2nd-gen Santro, the prices saw a hike of 20-30%. Before its discontinuation, the Santro range was priced from Rs. 5.70 lakh whereas its launch price was Rs. 3.90 lakh back in 2018. Similarly, the Santro top-spec variant was announced at Rs. 5.50 lakh whereas the same today costs Rs. 7.0 lakh ex-showroom.
