Hyundai i20 Turbo Petrol Variants Discontinued

Hyundai Discontinue Turbo Petrol Variants Of i20 Hatchback | V3Cars

In early 2023, Hyundai India silently discontinued the i20 turbo petrol variants equipped with the iMT transmission, which is quite simply a manual transmission with an automatically actuated clutch. Now, with the launch of the i20 facelift, Hyundai have discontinued the turbo petrol DCT variants of the premium hatchback, leaving the premium B2-segment hatchback with just the 1.2L normal petrol engine. Read on to know more about the recently launched i20 facelift and the upcoming i20 N Line.

Hyundai i20 Drops 1.0L Turbo Petrol Engine

Hyundai introduced the 1.0L turbo petrol engine in 2020 with the launch of the new-gen i20. However, owing to its exorbitant price, the turbo petrol variants of the i20 didn’t find many buyers and sales reduced even further after the introduction of the racier i20 N Line. As a result, Hyundai have now decided to pull the plug on the turbo petrol variants of the i20 and made it more affordable by adding a new base Era variant. Since Hyundai are yet to launch the updated i20 N Line, customers currently have no choice to spec the i20 with the 120PS turbo petrol engine. However, this may change soon with the introduction of the updated i20 N Line, which is likely to take place in the coming weeks. Since the i20 no longer offers a turbo petrol engine option, the price gap between the regular i20 and the i20 N Line is likely to increase by a considerable margin owing to the latter offering the more-expensive turbo petrol engine option.

Hyundai i20 N Line May Become More Affordable

However, the i20 N Line facelift, like the i20 facelift, could also boast a lower starting price than before with the addition of a manual transmission option. Unlike the regular i20 that now offers a lower-spec Era variant to keep the starting price low, the i20 N Line could offer a 6-speed manual transmission instead of the more complex 6-speed auto-clutch manual transmission (ACMT) that was offered earlier. Hyundai recently gave the Venue and Venue N Line a similar treatment by discontinuing the ACMT in favour of a 6-speed manual transmission, which helped the carmaker keep the prices of the turbo petrol variants in check.

Hyundai’s recent launches suggest that the carmaker is shunning away from ACMT transmissions. For example, the new Verna is offered with both manual and conventional automatic transmission options with both the turbo petrol and normal petrol engines. Similarly, when the Creta received its BS6 phase-2 update, Hyundai dropped the ACMT option from both the diesel and petrol engine variants. Moving forward, we do not expect Hyundai to continue with the ACMT in any of their offerings.
