Electric Car Prices To Be On Par With Petrol Vehicles In 2 Years: Gadkari | V3Cars

Mr. Nitin Gadkari, the Union minister for road transport and highways, has stated that the price of electric cars, or EVs, will be on par with petrol cars in the next 2 years. The Union minister said this during a discussion in the Lok Sabha regarding demands for grants for his ministry. The minister stated that major strides in technological development and green fuels will help reduce the cost of electric vehicles, helping manufacturers bring the prices (ex-showroom) on par with petrol-run cars.

“Within a maximum of two years, the cost of electric scooters, cars and auto-rickshaws will be the same as petrol scooters, cars and auto-rickshaws. Prices of lithium-ion batteries are coming down. We are developing this chemistry of zinc-ion, aluminium-ion, sodium-ion batteries. If you are spending Rs 100 on petrol, you will spend Rs 10 for using electric vehicles,” said Mr. Gadkari.

Currently, electric cars such as the Nexon EV cost around Rs. 6.0 lakh more than the equivalent petrol-powered variant. In the case of the MG ZS EV and MG Astor, the price difference is even more significant. If you compare the cost of the sole ZS EV variant (Exclusive) to the top Astor variant (Sharp O), the price difference comes out to over Rs. 8.0 lakh.

The transport minister, who was present at the launch of the hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai pilot project, also mentioned that hydrogen will soon become the cheapest fuel alternative in the country. Gadkari urged MPs to use hydrogen-based transportation and use sewage water in their own neighbourhoods to make hydrogen.

In addition to this, Mr. Gadkari also said that the government will significantly improve road infrastructure by 2024. “American roads are not good because America is rich. America is rich because American roads are good. To make India prosperous again, I  assure you that before December 2024, India’s road infrastructure will be like America,” he said.  Last but not least, the Union minister said the government has undertaken projects worth Rs. 62,000 crore in the national capital to ease traffic congestion and tackle pollution.
