E20-Compliant Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun Feature At India Energy Week | V3Cars

On February 7, Skoda and Volkswagen introduced E20 fuel-compliant versions of the Kushaq and Taigun at the Alternative Fuels Based Vehicles Rally in Bengaluru. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the rally to inaugurate the G20 Presidency flagship event - the India Energy Week (IEW).

This event, organized by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), pledges to cut India’s emissions to net zero by the year 2070. Interestingly, both Skoda and Volkswagen, which focus more on India’s premium car segment, have already built future E20-compliant engines. E20-compliant engines run on a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol.

Piyush Arora, the Managing Director and CEO of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, said “Our 'Made in India' vehicles - the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun were designed in anticipation of the changing mobility dynamics in India and are E20 compliant. We are aligned with the vision of E20 compliance as envisaged by the Government of India and committed towards decarbonized mobility. We will continue to focus towards sustainable mobility solutions, including biofuels as India advances towards its goal of leading the world toward a clean energy transition.”

The carmaker’s vision is in line with the Volkswagen Group’s global ‘goTOzero’ environmental mission statement, aiming to become a carbon-neutral company by 2050. The Skoda-Volkswagen facility in Aurangabad transitioned to 100% green energy in November 2022, much ahead of its target of 2025. This will reduce the facility’s CO2 emissions by up to 48% each year. Their Pune facility has the largest rooftop solar panel in the country, catering to almost 30% of their annual energy needs.

In addition to these 2 carmakers, Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki and MG are also on the forefront in the decarbonized automobile mission. Cars like Creta, Grand Vitara and Astor are already compatible with E20 fuel. Oil marketing companies aligning with the government’s vision are setting up ethanol plants to facilitate E20-based vehicles. The transition from traditional petrol vehicles to E20 vehicles is not too far away. 83 fuel outlets in the country are already E20-compliant and more are soon to join the list. Similarly, new E20-compliant vehicles will also be on the rise in the following years.
