BMW M2 Launched In India At Rs. 98 Lakh

BMW M2 India Launched At Rs. 98.0 Lakh; Gets A Manual And Automatic | V3Cars

BMW India recently announced the prices of their smallest M-series sportscar — M2. They’ll bring  it to Indian buyers via the full import route and it costs Rs. 98.0 lakh (ex-showroom). Unlike the M4, which gets and opinion-splitting large grille, the M2 gets a more palatable version of BMW’s front grille design. While the front of the M2 looks modern but fairly sedate, the rear conveys that it means business. However, the most striking thing to note about the M2 is the option of a 6-speed manual transmission.

For daily driving, we may prefer an automatic but in a rear-wheel drive, high-performance sportscar, a manual transmission is infinitely more engaging than an automatic. The fun of rowing through the gears on a short-throw H-pattern shifter and rev-matching downshifts is something worth experiencing on a race track or some winding roads. For the fun and engagement of a manual transmission, the 0.2 second penalty in the 0-100kmph sprint time is totally worth it.

BMW M2 Engine Specs

Just like the larger M4, the M2 also gets the same 3.0L twin turbo petrol engine with 6 cylinders. It makes 460PS of power at 6250rpm and 550Nm of torque between 2650 and 5870rpm. An 8-speed torque converter automatic sends the power to the rear wheels. The M2 can accelerate from zero to 100kmph in 4.1 seconds and keep going all the way up to supercar-like 290kmph.

Even with its high performance figures, the M2 claims to deliver a shade above 10kmpl — that’s IF you are driving it like a typical city car. If you drive it like it was meant to be driven, then its mileage figure won’t come anywhere near the official claimed figure of 10.13kmpl.

With the 6-speed manual transmission, the M2 can sprint to 100kmph in 4.3 seconds and has a lower mileage figure too. But for the engagement of driving a manual transmission high-performance sportscar with rear-wheel drivetrain, the penalty in acceleration and fuel economy are more than worth it.

If you are interested in some fun-to-drive cars under Rs. 1.0 crore (ex-showroom), then you should also take a look at the new Z4 from BMW. Effectively, it’ll cost almost Rs. 10.0 lakh less on-road and it can also accelerate quite well. The convertible form factor also makes it quite an eye candy but the lack of a manual transmission option may be a dealbreaker for the ones who want to master the art of driving fast.
