How Is Maruti XL6 More Fuel Efficient Than The Ertiga – We Explain | V3Cars

Maruti Suzuki recently launched the updated Ertiga and XL6 within a span of one week. Both the updated Ertiga and XL6 get a new 1.5L normal petrol engine with dual-jet technology and a new 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The new powertrain delivers improved fuel efficiency over the older setup.

However, the Ertiga has a lighter kerb weight and skinnier tyres when compared to the XL6. Hence, it’s easy to think that the Ertiga would offer more fuel efficiency than the XL6. In reality, though, it’s the XL6 from Nexa which delivers a better ARAI-claimed fuel efficiency figure. Want to know how? Read on.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) are famous for their frugal and refined powertrains. Speaking of fuel efficiency, the XL6 delivers a claimed fuel efficiency of 20.97kmpl and 20.27kmpl with the manual and automatic transmission respectively. On the other hand, the Ertiga offers a claimed fuel efficiency of 20.51kmpl and 20.30kmpl with the same engine and gearbox combo as the XL6.

The Maruti Nexa XL6’s kerb weight is about 20-50kg heavier than the Ertiga facelift. In addition to the additional weight, the XL6 also gets fatter and bigger tyres which should, in theory, take a toll on fuel efficiency. However, Maruti Suzuki engineers revealed that they have chosen tyres with a low rolling resistance for the XL6, which isn’t the case with the Ertiga.

Hence, even with taller and fatter tyres, the XL6 manages to extract better fuel efficiency than the Ertiga. However, the difference in fuel efficiency between the two family movers isn’t a lot, especially when you consider the fact that the Ertiga can haul 7 passengers whereas the XL6 can only accommodate 6 passengers.
