Toyota Rumion Expected Vs Actual — Price Reaction | V3Cars

In this article, we’ll take a look at the Rumion’s launch prices and see how close (or off) we were from our expected prices. This will help us better understand Toyota’s pricing strategy for their upcoming vehicles of similar body style or price band.

Toyota Rumion — Expected Vs Launch Price

In terms of absolute ex-showroom price, we were off by Rs. 24,000 - Rs. 68,000. In percentage terms, the actual launch prices of the Rumion were up to 5.23% off on the higher side. The prices of the lower variants were somewhat closer to our estimations but still more than 2% off.

Our assumption with the estimations, as laid out in the expected price article, was that Toyota would respect the Rs. 10.0 lakh price barrier to keep the price attractive. Even the Altroz XZ Plus (S) CNG, which launched at Rs. 10.03 lakh, got a minor price correction to make sure it didn’t cross the psychological barrier of Rs. 10.0 lakh.

We were hoping that the higher variants of the Rumion would carry a smaller premium to make them more attractive to buyers. As we’ve seen, people are willing to pay more for a Toyota car while Maruti usually remains a budget-buyer’s pick.

Thus, the rebadge would help Toyota move some high-margin variants of the Ertiga/Rumion while Maruti Suzuki could continue to address the demands of MPV buyers seeking a more affordable variant.

Toyota Rumion — Price Reaction

The reality was way off from our estimations though. It seems that Toyota are paying a hefty premium to Maruti Suzuki for borrowing their technology. In the case of the Hyryder, perhaps they were paying a lower premium as they also participated in the hybrid powertrain development. With the Rumion, it was a total rebadge and not much else.

With a more expensive manual variant, Toyota also make the automatic variant of the Rumion appear more value-for-money. In the case of the Hyryder, the automatic costs Rs. 1.30 lakh more than the manual. Here too, we were hoping to see a similar strategy play out. But we see that Toyota Rumion even beats the Ertiga’s absurd premium for an automatic transmission.

While Maruti Suzuki charge Rs. 1.50 lakh for the 6-speed torque converter automatic, Toyota are asking for Rs. 1.60 for the convenience of not having to shift gears manually.

Moreover, the Rumion doesn’t get the G petrol-automatic and the G CNG-manual variants. These are the ZXI equivalent in the case of Ertiga. Among all variants of the Rumion, the G variant is the best in terms of value for money and it will offer a more balanced ownership experience. It even earned our top recommendation in our variants explained comparison.
