Hatchback Sales Analysis

Hatchbacks Segment September 2022 Car Sales - YoY Change

  • Maruti Suzuki may not have a strong grip in the sedan segment, but they have the hatchback segment under their command.
  • This is evident as Maruti Suzuki manufactures 4 of the top 5 best selling hatchbacks and 6 out of the top 10.
  • The WagonR lost its top spot to the Baleno in August and then Baleno lost it to the Alto and Alto K10 pair in the month of September 2022.
  • Alto pair landed the top spot as their dispatches have more than doubled in the last 12 months owing to the launch of the new Alto K10 in August.
  • As expected, given its falling numbers over the past few months, the Hyundai Santro has been discontinued.
  • The Maruti Ignis was the best performing hatchback in September 2022 YoY comparison, with over a 1000% rise in dispatches as compared to September 2021.
  • Swift was the second best performing car in the category, with over 375% YoY gains in September 2022.
  • Renault Kwid was the biggest loser, with  a 26% decline in sales. The Tata Altroz was the second biggest loser with a 9.5% decline in dispatches in YoY comparison for September, followed by the Honda Jazz with a 7.35% decline.
  • Apart from the discontinuation of Santro recently, Mahindra KUV100, Datsun Redi-GO, Volkswagen Polo and Datsun GO were also discontinued over the past year.
