The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) have asked several e-commerce companies like Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal to permanently delist all seatbelt alarm stopper clips and similar devices from their websites. Read on to know more details about this decision from CCPA.

Seatbelt Alarm Stopper Clips No Longer Available For Good

From July 2019, all the cars sold in the country were mandated to offer seatbelt reminders and speed-sensing alarms. Since then, we have seen a strong surge in the usage of seatbelt alarm stopper clips, which essentially is a seatbelt buckle without the actual seatbelt. These seatbelt stopper clips fool the sensors and disable the security chime. After investigating the matter, CCPA have asked all e-commerce websites to immediately stop the listings of such devices.

As a result, 13,118 car seatbelt alarm stoppers have been delisted from 5 e-commerce platforms. Amazon delisted 8,095 clips, Flipkart delisted 4,000 - 5,000 units, Meesho delisted 21 and Shopclues and Snapdeal delisted one each. Furthermore, CCPA also issued orders against these 5 e-commerce websites for the violation of consumer rights and unfair trade practices under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

The regulator also revealed that some sellers were also selling these clips under the garb of bottle openers and cigarette lighters. While the usage of these clips is detrimental to your own safety in the first place, it can also serve as a hurdle for customers seeking an insurance claim in case of an accident. The insurance company can deny the claim by citing the negligence of the claimant.

We urge all our readers to use seatbelts and avoid using devices that impact their safety on the road. One should wear a seatbelt all the time, even while seated in the rear seats. A report from the Ministry of Road Transport And Highways (MoRTH) revealed that over 16,000 persons lost their lives due to not wearing a seatbelt. It is crucial to note that out of these 16,000 persons, 8,438 were drivers and the remaining 7,959 were passengers.
