Peugeot 2008 SUV Spotted On Test

The Peugeot 2008 SUV was first spied testing on Indian roads in 2021 near Stellantis’ manufacturing plant in Chennai where they manufacture the Citroen C3. Back then, it begged the question whether Stellantis was considering a reintroduction of the French brand in India. The 2008 SUV that was spied on camera featured a red paint job with very minimal camouflage. The only camouflage was to cover up the brand logo and the name of the SUV. The 2008 is a midsize crossover SUV in European markets, where it rivals the likes of the Euro-spec Renault Captur and Skoda Kamiq, among others.

The 2008 SUV is based on Stellantis’ Common Modular Platform (CMP), which also underpins various other models, including the Citroen C3 and the new Jeep Avenger SUV. We believe the 2008 SUV spotted in India features the same 1.2L turbo petrol engine that also powers the Citroen C3. In Europe, the 2008 SUV is also available with a 1.0L turbo petrol engine in lower variants.

If Stellantis plan to reintroduce the Peugeot brand in India, the 2008 SUV could very well become their first model as it shares its platform and powertrain with the C3, which has achieved a very high level of localisation in India. However, against established rivals like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Nexa Grand Vitara and others, the 2008 will have to do more than just offer a good list of features and performance. Considering the pricing strategy of Stellantis with the Citroen C3, eC3 and C5, we’ll have to say that the 2008 probably won’t carry an attractive price tag.

*Expected

As far as engines options are concerned, we expect Peugeot to offer the 2008 SUV with the same 1.2L turbo petrol engine from the Citroen C3. In the C3, this engine produces 110PS of power and 190Nm of torque. With this platform and powertrain sharing, Peugeot may have a shot at selling the 2008 with a value-for-money price tag.

If Peugeot equip the India-spec 2008 SUV with the same engine, it could find a sweet spot between the 1.0L turbo petrol and 1.5L turbo petrol engine options of the VW Taigun and Skoda Kushaq. The Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos currently do not come with a turbo petrol engine option. However, both carmakers are likely to equip their respective SUVs with the 1.5L turbo petrol engine from the Hyundai Verna soon. For now, however, the 2 SUVs from Hyundai and Kia only get one petrol engine option – a 1.5L normal petrol. As far as the Grand Vitara and Urban Cruiser Hyryder are concerned, both SUVs do not offer a turbo petrol engine as of yet. They are only available with a 1.5L normal petrol engine with mild hybrid and a 1.5L strong hybrid petrol engine.

Considering the fact that the Peugeot 2008 is a larger SUV than the Citroen C3 (with which it shares its platform), we expect the Peugeot SUV to be priced higher than the C3’s highest variant. Being a C-segment SUV, we could expect a price tag ranging from Rs. 10.0 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base variant up to Rs. 20.0 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top variant of the 2008.
