Maruti Suzuki S-Cross Discontinued After Zero Units Produced In Last 2 Months | V3Cars
Back in 2015, Maruti Suzuki launched its premium customer service concept, Nexa, with the launch of the S-Cross crossover. Today, the Nexa range includes models such as the Ignis, Baleno, Ciaz and the XL6. Sadly, the S-Cross fell out of flavour a few years after it was launched and its sales have been falling ever since. In fact, Maruti did not produce a single unit of the S-Cross in July and August. Hence, we can safely say that Maruti have discontinued the S-Cross premium crossover. It will soon be replaced by the Grand Vitara SUV.
When launched, Maruti offered the S-Cross with a choice of 2 diesel engines, both of which were sourced from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. The 1.3L turbo diesel engine (DDIS 200) was so common in several cars that it earned the nickname “the national engine of India.” The other option was a powerful 1.6-litre turbo diesel that was badged the DDIS 320.

Two years later, Maruti Suzuki refreshed the S-Cross with a facelift that included redesigned headlights with LED illumination, an updated grille and new LED tail lights. However, with the facelift, Maruti pulled the plug on the 1.6L Diesel engine and only offered the crossover with the 1.3L turbo diesel engine.
Later, when BS6 emission norms came into effect, the S-Cross disappeared from the market for a considerable amount of time. However, it managed to make a comeback with a new petrol engine. Maruti Suzuki decided to continue selling the S-Cross, this time with the 1.5L petrol engine that also powered the Ciaz, Ertiga and XL6.

Sadly, the petrol powered S-Cross did not feature any major changes over its petrol predecessor. This led to a dip in sales as the S-Cross was now competing against feature-rich rivals like the Kia Seltos and the 2nd gen Hyundai Creta. With little to no demand for the S-Cross, it is not surprising that Maruti didn’t produce a single unit of the crossover in the last 2 months.
Fortunately, Maruti Suzuki have a new SUV in the form of the Grand Vitara to replace the S-Cross and eat into the Hyundai Creta-Kia Seltos’ market share.
Like the S-Cross, the Grand Vitara is based on Suzuki’s Global-C platform. However, unlike the S-Cross, the new Grand Vitara offers the option of all-wheel-drive with its top-spec manual variant. It will also offer the option of a strong hybrid powertrain for buyers looking for impressive fuel economy from their SUVs. Apart from the Grand Vitara’s cousin, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, none of the other SUVs in this segment offer all-wheel-drive or a strong hybrid powertrain.
