Maruti Suzuki India Limited have discontinued Alto and S-Presso variants equipped with only a driver airbag. As per the new safety standards, every car on sale in the Indian market must come equipped with dual airbags as standard.

Alto And S-Presso

Speaking of the Alto range, Maruti Suzuki have pulled the plug on the STD and LXi variants. The STD(O) and LXi(O) variants that are equipped with dual airbags will remain on sale. Similarly, the STD, LXi and VXi variants of the S-Presso have been discontinued. The STD(O), LXi(O) and VXi(O) of the S-Presso will remain on sale as before.

It remains to be seen how the entry-level hatchback segment will be affected once the new amendment for 6 airbags as standard comes into effect in October 2022. Cars that currently comply with the 6 airbag rule with their top-spec variants can easily offer the same in the base variants as well. That step, however, will increase the costs substantially and make the cars more expensive.

As per the latest launches from Maruti Suzuki, the Baleno became the first new Suzuki model to offer 6 airbags, that too in both Zeta and Alpha variants. In addition to that, the recently launched Ertiga facelift offers 4 airbags in the top-spec variant. Come October 2022, we expect all the cars in the market to offer 6 airbags as standard.
