Mahindra XUV900 Confirmed; Will Be A SUV Coupe | V3Cars
A few weeks back, we reported Mahindra is working on the XUV900 as the carmaker trademarked the XUV900 name along with several other monikers. Now, some sources have confirmed that Mahindra has greenlighted the XUV900 and it will be a coupe SUV.
This is not the first time Mahindra is working on a coupe SUV for the Indian market. Back at the 2016 Auto Expo, Mahindra showcased the XUV Aero concept which was a coupe SUV version of the first-gen Mahindra XUV500. Similarly, the XUV900 is also expected to be based on the upcoming XUV700. Expect it to look largely similar to the XUV700 at least till the B-Pillar, post that it will feature a sloping roofline and a redesigned rear end. As a result, the XUV900 is likely to be a 5-seater SUV, unlike the 7-seater XUV700.
The XUV900 is also expected to share its mechanicals with the XUV700. The upcoming 7-seater SUV will be offered with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. The 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine is likely to make around 190PS while the 2.2-litre diesel is expected to churn out around 180PS. On the Thar, petrol and diesel engines make 150PS and 130PS, respectively. Both the engines are expected to be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission as well as a 6-torque converter automatic transmission. Mahindra has also confirmed that the XUV700 will be offered with an optional 4WD system.
The XUV900 is likely to be similar to the XUV700 in terms of features and cabin layout as well however, it will feature more premium materials inside the cabin positioning it above the XUV700. It is too soon to say anything about the launch of the XUV900 but expect the coupe SUV to go on sale, not before 2024.
The XUV900 could be the first mass-market SUV to go on sale in the country with price ranging around Rs 20 lakh. Other coupe SUVs offered in India are the BMW X4, X6 and Audi Q8 with prices ranging from Rs 70 lakh to over Rs 1 crore.
Meanwhile, Mahindra is all set to launch the XUV700 in India by the end of this year. It is expected to be loaded on the features and will be equipped with new petrol and diesel engines. Prices are expected to range from Rs 16 lakh to Rs 22 lakh. It will take on the likes of the Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus and the upcoming Hyundai Alcazar.
