Mahindra Unveil Thar.e 5 Door Electric SUV Ahead Of 2025 Launch | V3Cars
Mahindra took the wraps off of the Thar.e at the FuturScape event held in Cape Town, South Africa on August 15, 2023. Although the Thar.e showcased at the event was a concept SUV, it previews several details we could expect from the production version of the all-electric Thar that is set to launch in 2025. Check out more details about the Thar.e here.
New Platform For Mahindra Thar.e
At the event, Mahindra stated that the Thar.E would be developed from the ground up on a dedicated EV skateboard platform instead of the current ICE-powered Thar’s ladder frame construction. The Thar.e will be built on Mahindra’s new INGLO-P1 skateboard platform and the production version of the electric SUV will find a place in Mahindra’s upcoming Born Electric range of vehicles. Mahindra claim that the production version of the Thar.e will offer a wheelbase measuring between 2775mm and 2975mm, which should free up a lot of space for 5 passengers and their luggage with ease. The additional length over the ICE-powered Thar 3 Door should also help Mahindra equip the Thar.e with a large battery pack for better range.
Mahindra Thar.e Design And Features
The Thar.e features a design unlike anything we’ve seen so far from Mahindra. First off, the electric SUV doesn’t share a single body panel with the Thar ICE and instead has adopted a futuristic approach with LED lights and an edgy design.
Up front, the Thar.e gets squarish LED headlamps with rounded corners while the main beams are enclosed within tiny rectangles. The upright grille gets a gloss black finish with an illuminated Thar.e logo on the right and three LED bars on the left. The LED bars could possibly be utilisied for showing charge status like in the Hyundai Ioniq 5. A steel bumper with a bright orange tow hook completes the rugged off-roader look.

Viewed in profile, the Thar.e is noticeably longer than the Thar 3 Door SUV that is currently on sale. The extra length has helped Mahindra attach an extra set of doors for easy ingress and egress for 2nd row passengers. Other highlights include squared off wheel arches and exposed door hinges and massive wheels with off-road-spec tyres.
The rear of the Mahindra Thar.e features a squared design for the LED tail lamps while the spare wheel is mounted at the centre of the tailgate that opens sideways like in the now discontinued Ford EcoSport. A steel bumper with an orange tow hook completes the design of the Thar.e.
Mahindra Thar.e Interior Design
At the event, Mahindra stated that the production-spec Thar.e will have a fully hoseable interior, quite like the Jeep Wrangler. Other new features include 75 sounds designed by A.R. Rahman for various warning and chimes inside the cabin. The concept SUV featured a massive, square-shaped touchscreen infotainment system at the middle of the dashboard that reminds us of the new infotainment system in the Jeep Wrangler. The driver gets a digital instrument cluster as well and the dashboard features chunky grab rails for when the going gets tough. Mahindra have promised the production-spec Thar.e will feature a mixture of recycled PET and other sustainable materials for the seat upholstery and various trims and pieces.
Mahindra Thar.e Powertrain Specs
Since the Mahindra Thar.e will belong to Mahindra’s B.E. range of electric vehicles, we can expect it to pack a larger battery pack than the Mahindra XUV400. We expect the Thar.e to offer 4-wheel-drive as standard and a range of around 400km on a single charge. Stay tuned to V3Cars to keep updated on more information about the Thar.e as and when Mahindra release them to us.

Mahindra Thar.e Launch Timeline
Mahindra are yet to reveal the launch timeline for the Thar.e. However, Mahindra’s new electric vehicle manufacturing plant is set to go online in 2024 and we expect Mahindra to launch its Born Electric range of electric cars from the second half of next year. The Thar.e could launch a little later, possibly by 2025.
