Mahindra Thar 5 Door Spied Again – One Year Of Spy Shots: What Have We Learned

After 1 Year Of Mahindra Thar 5 Door Spy Shots, Here’s What We Know So Far | V3Cars

Mahindra continue to test the Thar 5 Door ahead of its launch in 2024 and we have looked at spy shots of the upcoming Mahindra SUV in various forms of testing for over a year now. Over the last year, each spy shot has revealed new and interesting details about the Thar 5 Door. Here, we take a look, hopefully for the last time, at the latest spy shots of the 5 door off-road SUV and what the production-spec version is likely to offer when it goes on sale in 2024.

Mahindra Thar 5 Door - What Do We Know After A Year Of Spy Shots?

Let’s get the most obvious one out of the way first. Yes, the Mahindra Thar 5 Door sports a longer wheelbase and overall length than the Thar 5 Door. While the initial few spy shots gave us a clue about the size of the upcoming SUV, the first batch of test mules were adorned with the same trims as the standard Thar 3 Door. So, they were spotted with circular halogen headlamps, boxy front grille with 6 vertical slats, the same front and rear bumper as well as the same tail lamps.

However, over time, the Thar 5 Door test mules started featuring subtle changes, including LED projector headlamps, a larger and toothier front grille with split vertical slats, and a more rounded front bumper. Later spy shots also revealed LED projector fog lamps and new multi-spoke alloy wheels. The biggest surprise was the Thar 5 Door spy shot that gave us a glimpse of its fixed metal roof equipped with a sunroof.

Like the exterior, the initial spy shots of the Thar 5 Door’s interior showed an identical cabin as the Thar 3 Door. However, recent spy shots suggest that the upcoming 5 door Thar SUV could get a larger touchscreen infotainment system and a revamped dashboard layout as well as more cabin features to keep all 5 passengers comfortable and entertained. We expect the production-spec Thar 5 Door to offer a new steering wheel borrowed from the XUV700, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a new instrument cluster, front and rear armrest, automatic climate control and an electronic sunroof.

As far as engine options are concerned, we expect the new Thar 5 Door to retain the same 2.2L turbo diesel and the 2.0L turbo petrol engine options as the Thar 3 Door. However, both engines could offer more power and torque than the Thar 3 Door to overcome the extra weight. Both engine options are likely to come with manual and automatic transmission options along with 2WD and 4WD drivetrains. In the Scorpio N, the 2.2L turbo diesel engine comes in 2 states of tune — 130PS and 175PS. We expect Mahindra to offer the Thar 5 Door diesel with the higher power output while the Thar 5 Door petrol is expected to produce 200PS of power from its 2.0L turbo petrol engine.

While earlier rumours suggested Mahindra are planning to launch the Thar 5 door by the end of 2023, a spokesperson for the brand confirmed it will only go on sale in 2024. Hence, it is safe to say that Mahindra could reveal the Thar 5 door in early 2024 and launch it soon after. The new Thar 5 door will not have any direct rivals, save for the Force Gurkha 5 door, which is also slated for a 2024 launch.
