Kia Sonet CNG 1.0L Turbo Petrol Spied – Launch Soon? | V3Cars

New spy shots of the Kia Sonet have emerged on the internet. While the test car wears the old Kia logo and the GT Line badge, it’s the CNG sticker on the rear windscreen caught our attention. As the GT Line in the Sonet only gets the 1.0L turbo petrol engine, it could be the engine choice for CNG conversion.

With fuel prices rising to all-time highs, more car manufacturers are showing interest in alternative fuel options. Of late, CNG cars have had a bump in sales thanks to the low running costs and emissions. The Sonet CNG is likely to be the first CNG model from Kia India.

The Sonet 1.0L turbo petrol makes 120PS of power at 6000rpm and 172Nm of torque between 1500rpm and 4000rpm. In the CNG model, however, the power and torque figures are likely to see a dip. Kia offer the 1.0L turbo petrol with an auto-clutch manual transmission and a dual-clutch transmission. We expect the auto-clutch manual transmission to be the default option for the 2022 Sonet CNG.

It remains to be seen what variants the Sonet CNG will be offered. As per the recent trend, manufacturers like Tata have offered their CNG cars in top variants as well. Similarly, Maruti Suzuki had added ZXI variant in the Ertiga CNG range with the recently-launched facelift. Hence, we can expect Kia India to offer the CNG option with the top-spec variants as well.

Speaking of other CNG cars in the segment, Tata Motors are working on the Nexon CNG and it has been spied on test multiple times. The 2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza is also likely to get a CNG powertrain – the same setup that we’ve seen on the recently-launched Ertiga facelift. The Sonet CNG will go up against the upcoming Tata Nexon CNG and Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG. We expect Kia India to launch the Sonet CNG later this year.
