Kia Carens CNG To Come In Top Variants – Premium Positioning Expected | V3Cars

Yesterday, we broke the news that Kia India have begun testing the Carens CNG with the 1.4L turbo petrol engine. Now, we can confirm that Kia will offer the Carens CNG in top variants as well, unlike what we have seen in the CNG space so far.

The Carens test car that was spied can be seen with alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster and leather upholstery. In addition to that, the registration sticker on the side glass confirms the test car to be the top-spec 1.4L turbo petrol variant. It is worth noting that the test car was the 7-seater variant and it remains to be seen if Kia will offer the CNG with both 6- and 7-seater options or just the 7-seater variants.

The 1.4L turbo petrol engine in the Carens produces 140PS of power at 6000rpm and 242Nm of torque between 1500rpm and 3200rpm. Along with the 6-speed manual, Kia India also offer the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission with the Carens 1.4L. However, the latter seems unlikely with the CNG powertrain. With the CNG kit, the power and torque output will see a considerable dip but it will still have an ample performance advantage over its arch-rivals.

Kia India are likely to position the Carens CNG as a premium product in the CNG mobility space. If we retrospect, Tata Motors was the first carmaker in India to offer the CNG option in the top-spec variants with the Tiago hatchback and the Tigor sub-compact sedan. Recently, Maruti Suzuki also added the ZXI CNG variant to the Ertiga range, which earlier only used to be offered in the VXI trim. Going further, we expect more car manufacturers to adopt CNG as an alternative fuel and not a low-cost compromise.
